A couple of weeks ago I had my Mower (ride on) serviced this is the invoice I received, I am not complaining about the amount charged but I just can not make head or tail of the work description, I do commend the author for using proper joined up writing which is a rarity to day. what do you make of it can you decipher :confused:Forgot to post invoice

You sure this isn't your doctor writing out a prescription?

I see that your labour charges are just as high as ours are ...

Yes and that's just for mowers for cars it starts at $75/hr (Dealer) the old formula for charge out rate used to be for every $1 for wages (mech) + $1 overheads + $1 profit so 3 times the wage, on that basis a mechanic in a dealership would get a min of $1100/week now that is not a lot for a fully qualified mechanic. I had a man trim some trees for me and he charged $500/day he had no formal training and does not have to study say math or engineerins as a mech does and he earns $2500/week.

He changed your filters, cleaned/sharpened the blades, cleaned out the carb (I think) and some other illegible stuff.

My writing has always been poor and these days it is even worse. I type everything that needs to be legible as I agree there is nothing worse than struggling to understand someones writing. I think maybe that sometimes they write like that so you will not be able to understand what exactly they are charging you for. Or maybe I am old and grumpy.

Well I was thinking the same thing, this is the only hand written invoice that I get but there is not much competition in my old town I think musicteach must be used to this sort of thing.

Trust me... I have seen some pretty bad hand writing!

I must be even worse with music scores.

The absolute best, Teddy, is when you look at a student's flip book for marching band where they have written tiny tiny notes onto the music (photocopies of course) and it has been smudged by rain and general wear and tear and the writing wasn't exactly great to start with. Trust me, been there done that, got the t-shirt, even had it signed by the band!

Well, if you are old and grumpy, then so am I ...

I take my Jetta to the dealer for all service ... they use computers and printers that dispense a very legible description of the work performed.
I am not a proponent of dealer servicing, but since my Son works for the same company (in the body shop division), I get the parts at dealer cost and a 20% discount on labour. The non-dealer shops can't beat that price.

My handwriting it terrible too ... that is why I print everything in block letters ... learned that from my Dad as that is how he always wrote.

I always use a dealer for my servicing as they have the latest on updates and all the required tools, the independent just does not have these and a small error can be very costly to correct plus as you say Lars you get an itemised and detailed invoice. but the independent is more of a mechanic where as the dealership jokers are mostly just removers and fitters.

Using an independent cost me about a third of the cost of the main dealer for the BMW. No coffee, magazines or comfy chairs mind you and no pretty receptionists, but hey! Have used the same garage for 26 years so I have built up quite a good relationship with them, although I did moan when they refused to give me a gold watch last year. As I am quite mechanically minded and at least understand the questions even if I don not know the answers I find it very easy to deal with mechanics.
