Opeth - Prog Metal

Apologies if this is not the place to post this, but they *are* considered progressive by some.

Does anyone here like Opeth?
They have some amazing songs, they've released around 7 albums.

I recommend getting Damnation and Blackwater Park - great prog metal.

Yes I have heard the new album, Ghost Reveries it is called?
Nice set of songs. Their song structure is brilliant, very complex and original.
You can almost hear classical music in their composures.

Yes that is their latest release.
If you aren't a metal fan, get Damnation, its all acoustic based songs. Its an amazing CD:)

Damnation was my first introduction to Opeth - then I heard Blackwater Park ... bit of a surprise there! :)

I like them as well, although it does takes some time ot get used to the death grunts (or whatever they are called) if you dont come from that music scene.

I seen references to them being called "Throatists" (since it scarcely qualifies as "singing"). To me it often sounds like the Cookie Monster trying to sing :)

Opeth is pretty good, but hardly an example of the best of this area of music, IMO. Many of their progressions are obvious and their drumming has never been on par with the rest of the music(it's usually fairly simple and repetitive). Also, their softer parts and acoustic bits seem forced at times. Bands like Necrophagist, The Faceless and Between the Buried and Me are more complex and less derivative/predictable.
