Windows restore

Caught a bit of Malware that popped up topic relevant advert side bars on all forums and most web sites, Pop up blocking and Adblock had no effect.

Eventually discovered something calling itself Webfui which I managed to uninstall; however I did try System restore, which has somehow vanished from Programmes/Accessories, had to run it manually, also noticed a number of other prorammes missing from the "Start" menu.

Even when I managed to run Restore it would not work for any of the restore points back to January 28 (none available before that)

Any ideas for "restoring" the Restore accessory so that it works? (hopefully without Format C: followed by reloading everything!)

I take it you don't have the installation CDs, do you have back up? I am sure a Windows computer forum would be able to help mike.

Hi Mike,

What version windows? And, sometimes the user can inadvertently turn restore off (or on) as well. More on that feature for Win 7.

For XP, Microsoft has this article.

I've found, in the past, that the original installation disks are rather useless after a couple years. I tried them on my former XP system, and the system refused to run it as the software on the install CD's is NOT "forwards compatible", in other words, the original install disks had the bare bones version and there was no way to update short of reformatting entirely. Shortly after that ugly scene, my XP mother board went to la-la-land and I replaced it with my present Win 7 Professional machine.

I'm running XP, in the MS link you quoted it says click Start then click My Computer, My Computer does not appear in the Start box!

It also says that Restore saves restore points when enabled, I do have restore points saved - almost daily back about 4 or 5 weeks !

Restore does not appear on "Programs/Accessories/System Tools" - which shows "Empty"

I can run Restore by going to Windows Explorer/Windows/System32/Restore/ and double click restui which is the restore app

That runs and shows a list of restore points to choose from which I do, after a few seconds does a restart and eventually opens a window which informs me that Restore is incomplete and asking to select a different restore point, I have tried all available restore points none work!

What if you hit 'start' then in the search box you type "my computer"? Or perhaps "control panel".

The more I delve into this the more problems I find!

Going to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Admin tools I get a blankscreen.

Getting somewhat frustrated!

I can sympathize with your frustration Mike .. It takes on the appearance as though you've got an infected drive ...

Try this if you can: ... an attempt to enable the control panel in the registry:

1) go to Start/Run/ then type "regedit"

2) in the list find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right pane if you can see the dword value "NoControlPanel" then your right click and modify change the value data to "0" or you can delete that dword value
The malware may have altered several things in the registry.

Beyond that a program like ad-aware might help some - there is a free version, but not sure it that one will actually correct the errors it finds, but at least one would then know what the problem possible was.

To make matters worse, Microsoft is pulling the plug on XP support on April 8th.
