• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Need help for GO and ubuntu please

Hello everybody !

I'm new here (by writting) but I've read this forum for several years. I'm french so please bear with my imperfect english...

I've used GO for 2 years, and on last week I decided to change my OS, which was windows 7, for Ubuntu.
I'm new to linux, but not to GO.
I did this because the PC running GO is quite "old", and my motherboard and processor couldn't deal with GO (I usually use this beautiful "Kalstrav" sampleset by Lars Paolo). It became worse and worse, with the sound freezing, latency issues, etc.

My issue is this one : after re-installing all the system (first ubuntu, last version) then GO (idem), GO works fine except this strange thing :

it doesn't show the TASK BAR, you see : "menu - Panel - ...etc "

I tried to find similar problems on the web, but couldn't succeed.

So if anyone has an idea about what is wrong, it would be very kind to help me.
Obviously, it's not a "tragic issue" because I still can use GO, but I can't modify anything like reverberation, temperament, etc.

Thank you in advance for any help you could give to me ! :)

The Ubuntu global menu is broken. This issue has been raised a few times in the past.

You just need to deinstall the global menu packages.

Google for "ubuntu disable global menu".

Do you mean Grandorgue global menu ?

I'm going to google using your "key" words, yes, but I'm afraid it'll be hard for me to understand how to uninstall these packages. as I said, I'm totally NEW to linux, and in english it's going to be even more difficult !

Since I wrote this post, I went on searching google with the words "taskbar missing in GO" (but in french), and I landed on a french forum where someone said he had the same problem, a few months ago, but unfortunately nobody had been able to help him, and he finally gave up with Ubuntu... :(

Thank you anyway, e9925248, I'll give news when I find something.

Recent Ubuntu versions have most of the application menus "moved" from the application window to a "topmost" bar that becomes visible when you move your mouse to the top of the screen. Also there's an issue with the initially empty Panel menu not shown in certain versions.

One solution is as Martin suggest to completely remove the global menu feature of Ubuntu (use google). Another is to only disable it for GrandOrgue. Then you have to modify the programstarter (you might have to install the package for "main menu" of something like that) and before the command that start the GO binary you put "env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= ". For both solutions you can also check http://askubuntu.com/questions/10481/how-do-i-enable-or-disable-the-global-application-menu for more reading.

Kind regards
