    Silent film organ accompaniment...

    Dear friends,

I just found this superb organ improvisation by Pierre Pincemaille for the silent film "Faust" from 1926 by Murnau. Msr. Pincemaille uses the glorious Cavaille-Coll at St. Ouen for the film:

*If a man wants God to hear his prayer quickly, then before he prays for anything else, even his own soul, when he stands and stretches out his hands towards God, he must pray with all his heart for his enemies. Through this action God will hear everything that he asks* -Abba Zeno-

*Protagoras: "Truth is subjective. What is true for you, and what is true for me, is true for me. Your opinion is true by virtue of its being your opinion."

*Socrates: "My opinion is: Truth is absolute, not opinion, and that you are in absolute error. Since this is my opinion, then according to your philosophy you must grant that it is true."

Thirty-five years ago I purchased the estate of an elderly pianist/organist who was going into an old-age home. She had played the piano and organ at Radio City Music Hall in the early 20's and had also played for the silent movies. Among her collection of music were many folios for accompanying the movies. Many songs had simple titles like chase scene, or romantic interlude. I have played many of these for fun. Some are famous tunes with these simplistic titles, while others are original music composed for the movies. Not everything is high quality, but they are interesting relics of another time.
