• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Christmas Fanfare

Hi - I know, it's only November, but I'm starting to think about Christmas music.
Does anyone here do a fanfare introduction to the bigger carols? - I'm thinking in particular of O Come all ye Faithful.
Just considering a different introduction for Midnight Mass in particular.

What are your opinions on this? - good, bad, or just plain ugly??

In my old days of playing I used trumpets and chimes as intro for midnight mass processional. Used a running chime pattern then adding a trumpet improv fanfare into the hymn.. can also use something similar to intro for "God of Our Fathers ". For he midnight Christmas as well as Easter I always pulled out all the stops.

Hi Jonesey,

You might want to check out this collection by Peter Lutkin. The 2nd piece is based on Hark the Herald Angels and has a fancy beginning that could be used (in part or in whole) for that hymn.

I'll keep looking in my 2.3 Gb (so far) digital library for more possibilities.

Found two for Adeste Fidelis ... don't know it they will work for your situation, but those are the only ones I can find in my searches at the moment.

Here are the two files ... they are in public domain, so no worries about copyright violations.

There is a hoard of material by Guilmant for Advent/Christmas on IMSLP.

This year, during Advent, I'm going to do all Noels mostly by Guilmant for preludes and special music (communion) when possible.

I think that it could be effective and stirring (if done in good taste). I am wondering whether to write something for Hark! the herald angels sing - perhaps with yet another alternative last verse re-harmonisation and new descant as well.

If you go on the Johannus Web Site, the resident organist posts music every month. He posted a fanfare style introduction in December 2009. If it isn't on the site send me a note. I still have the PDF somewhere.

Dear frriend
I have heard your wish and composed for you a fanfare on O Come All Ye Faithful.
I will create a new post for it very soon in this forum with the free Pdf sheet music.
For the moment you can here this fanfare here.

Jean-Paul - thank you so much, I haven't been on here for a week or so, so didn't see this.
I've downloaded it and will print it out tomorrow and start work on it.

Thank you again for sharing your talent with us.

Tim.
