Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony no.7 op.60 {"Leningrad"}, performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
I simply can't get over how cleverly Shostakovich--at about 7 minutes 30 seconds into the first movement--works in a Bolero like theme presaged by the soft but insistent beating of the single snare drum and the strings playing pizzicato. The dynamics slowly intensify and build until the whole orchestra has taken up the theme to its triumphant, crescendoing climax. What genius! I simply love this symphony!
Been away a little too long! Sorry I missed mentioning your audition of this earlier.Pirates of Penzance - D'Oyle Carte Opera Co
