I simply can't get over how cleverly Shostakovich--at about 7 minutes 30 seconds into the first movement--works in a Bolero like theme presaged by the soft but insistent beating of the single snare drum and the strings playing pizzicato. The dynamics slowly intensify and build until the whole orchestra has taken up the theme to its triumphant, crescendoing climax. What genius! I simply love this symphony!

This is my updated version of a post which I had originally submitted yesterday. I am currently listening to the first movement of the Leningrad {again}.

Today I listened to Antonin Dvorak--Concerto For Violin And Orchestra in A Minor, Op.53 and Romance in F Minor, Op.11. Both works are performed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenbolm, Itzhak Perlman, violin.
It was recorded at the All Saints Church, Tooting, London in 1974.

I have just burned 2 Cds of the last recital by David Oistrakh with Paul Badura-Skoda it took place in May 1974 in Vienna the sound quality is exceptional it has son by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert + some excerpts from other son and short pieces, as would be expected the playing is fantastic.

Salieri - sadly fell in Mozart's huge shadow, a very fine composer indeed.

I've been listening to Allegri's Miserere ... it was sung superbly at my church yesterday by the incredible choir. Came as part of the Good Friday service, sublime and hair raising.

Well, seeing as how we just wrapped up Good Friday, I'm sure it'll be unsurprising to discover that I took In Richard Wagner's final opera- Parsifal. (Barenboim-Berlin)

What might be surprising is- before that (inspired by a radio program earlier this week), I sampled Debussy's "Children's Corner," taken from a 4-disc 'Debussy-complete piano music' set by Gordon Fergus-Thompson.

Been away a little too long! Sorry I missed mentioning your audition of this earlier.

When I was younger, I thought The Mikado was clearly the best Gilbert & Sullivan opera, but lately, I think Mikado and Penzance are co-equal, with Pinafore a little behind.

A more somber mood for me today, though- listened to Jules Massenet's tragic opera Werther- London Symphony, Pappano, Alagna & Gheorghiu (presumably recorded some years before her current 'Kathleen Battle' phase-of-life).;)
