Shostakovich - Festive Overture - Boston Pops

Beethoven - String Quartet #14 in C Sharp Minor - Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

I love the Festive Overture - fills me with energy. The string quartet is sad especially movement 5 or 6? That piece was used in "Band of Brothers" miniseries right before or after the concentration camp was found.

Last night at Arizona Theatre: Hershey Felder as George Gershwin, Alone.

A stellar performance including an audience choice sing-a-long of the Gershwin songs towards the end of this two hour stage play. Mr. Felder is the only individual to whom the Gershwin heirs have granted permission to create the role of George Gershwin on stage.

Hearing him play Rhapsody in Blue was absolutely an unforgetable experience.

classical music?

I listened to a mozart cd today then went to the pipe organ to try out
Highland Cathedral like a new song. I love it because it was so simple
after listening to the download. I always have to play moonlight sonata
before I quit and Jesu Joy of man's desire. That's what classical music
I heard today.

I adore the Chopin F minor Ballade. I once wrote a small article on it for Music Teacher Magazine. It's the type of piece with which one can have a love affair for life!

Liszt - Sonata in b minor performed by Martha Argerich

My favourite music piece!

Have you heard the Pogorelich recording? Not Liszt as you or I might expect, but with that foundation that is, and sets apart Chopin. Highly individual, expansive and sure. In his own unique way, he reveals everything about it - not just the effect of it, but what actually brings about such an effect - if that makes sense. I was flawed by it utterly!

The Australian pianist Simon Tedeschi plays Gershwin wonderfully - and so he should. He's related to Gershwin on his mother's side. You can read about him on my website (www.phillipwilcher.com) if you're interested. And this might surprise you, but some time ago I listened to an early recording of Liberace playing a medley of Gershwin tunes, centred pretty much around the Rhapsody in Blue, to take in The Man I Love and I've Got Rhythm (and that Liberace certainly had!!) - and really, the playing was wonderful.

I enjoy Liberace. Lots of fun. Particularly when he plays Bumble Boogie, probably my fav boogie woogie piece.

Rojo, I also like to listen to Bumble Bee Boogie. I have Neil Diamond's
version of it, and he really rocked out with that one!;)

I enjoy Liberace. Lots of fun. Particularly when he plays Bumble Boogie, probably my fav boogie woogie piece.

Well, Liberace was my first introduction to the world of the piano as a child. I was probably around eight years of age and he'd play a twenty minute selection on Australian television every morning at 11.00 am. Then came the English TV series. After a while I took up classical music seriously and didn't take much notice of him. I was listening to Cortot. But then, in 1984 he toured here and through the urgings of another, I went to see and hear my childhood hero more out of curiosity. What effect would this showman/pianist now in his 60s have on me after years steeped in study? From the moment he walked on stage it was like he gave me my childhood back and I found great comfort in the knowledge that some things, some people never change. Fortune smiled on me years later and I was invited to stay in his Palm Springs home. If you visit the "Tribute Pages" on my website, you can read a small memoir titled "A Sequin of Events". In short, I came to learn that the man Wladziu Valentino Liberace was very real and generous of spirit. A kind and gentle soul. Sure, the showmanship eventually took over to overshadow the innateness of his keyboard skills, but sometimes I listen to what he does and I'm perplexed - it's stunning!I once had the crazy notion that inside every concert pianist was a Liberace trying to get out. I think he gave of himself immeasurably - it's a little sad sometimes to think the musician is so casually glossed over. Thanks for the sharing. I also remember as a child watching Peter Nero on television. Where is he now??

Enjoyed reading your post, Phillip; thanks. :)

methodistgirl- I haven't heard Neil Diamond's version; are you sure it's the same song?

Bumble Bee Boogie

Rojo, yes this is the same piece with Neil Diamond's style in it with the
lyrics. If you can find it the Bumble bee boogie is on his American Popular
song or You don't bring me flowers. One of the two. I hope you like it.
You might find yourself dancing to it!

Lyrics? Hmm. I'll keep my eye out for it. The version I like is for piano by Jack Fina. Thanks for the info!
