The original version of Mendelssohn's E minor violin concerto, played by Daniel Hope.

    I posted two extracts here

    http://www.talkclassical.com/1011-id...html#post18949

at the time I was still a member there, but apparently nobody noticed there's something wrong with the codas and simply referred to it as "The Mendelssohn concerto".

What for my dear docta's son?. I don't know better
recordings of those works The real first of
DFO-Mitropoulos live, is IMHO better that the very
famous done on studio. The Brahm's piece in the
hands of Julius is simply a marvel. And the Kreisler's
is definitive. Besides, I'm a specialist in histerical..
    sorry, historical recordings.

    Hi Corno,
The recording I own of this is Melodiya with Rozhdestvensky conducting, but the bass soloist is Anatoly Safiulin. It's from 1985, I assume you're probably referring to an even older recording.

I was exposed to this symphony with a recording conducted by Haitink. I've never heard the Kondrashin recordings of any Shostakovich, I don't think.

    Hi Fretless,

Thank you kindly for pointing out an inconsistent statement. I had conflated the recording of Gromadski singing the bass solo in *Execution of Stepan Razin* with *Babi Yar* - How horrible of me

    Cheers,

    Corno Dolce

Eek--not horrible at all! I was excited that I actually owned that recording. I don't know that much about Shostakovich specialists and discs. But now I have a new piece to seek out--never heard the Execution of Stepan Razin.

I don't think so, but it counts as Christmas music.

    Hi Fretless,

The *Execution of Stepan(Stenka)Razin* is one of the most rabble-rousing dramatic works out there - I kid you not! I never tire hearing it repeatedly.

    Cheers,

    Corno Dolce

    Today I listened to Shosty's 11th Symphony.

    Hi Some Guy,

I have Shosty's Lady MacBeth aka Katerina Izmailova. It is a very sexy opera - Ooo la la!!! I remember hearing a production of it a few years ago at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The production was, basically R-18 rated - quite graphical scenes and sounds to the extent I had to in one scene avert my eyes from the stage. The music fit the staging perfectly. These days, when ever I hear the trombones doing their raunchy glissandos in that one particular act, I can't help but envision the live performance :

    Cheers,

    Corno Dolce
