After Argerich's Shostakovich.I listened to excerpts of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Prokofiev's Liutenant Kije Suite and Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice played by St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov. Then i listened to Mendelssohn's 1st and 2nd piano concertos.Cyprien Katsaris is soloist with Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Kurt Masur. After that i listened Mendelssohn's 4th symphony played by Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of legendary Klaus Tennstedt.Right now i am listening to Beethoven's third piano concerto,Christian Zacharias at the piano,Hans Vonk at the baton and orchestra is Staatskapelle Dresden. After this concerto i will listen to Schubert's 9th symphony from Klaus Tennstedt and Berliner Philharmoniker and i will close the day with Strauss' Ein Heldenleben from Mariss Jansons and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Can't bear Shostakovich, too tedious and depressing.

However, speaking of tedious and depressing, I've been listening to some a wonderful recording of Mahler's longwinded but glorious 6th Symphony ... Czech Philharmonic, Vaclav Neuman.

There's something tidy, delicious and crisp about the way those eastern Europeans approach music.

Hello Art Rock,

Yes, these quartets are so expressive - They are like *mini-symphonies* to my ears. It took me awhile to really appreciate Shostakovich's chamber works but now I can't be without them.

Cheers,

CD :):):)
