What classical music did you listen to today?

Giovanni: No hard feelings here... just good jest! ;) cheers my good man!

mc 4ces: it's quite alright, just wanted to point out to later posters that the topic here actually was classical music, and not hip-hop. - There are plenty of room for discussing hip-hop at this site, just not right here in "this corner" - as you've also stated.
With that said, please share with us your own feelings on hip-hop... why have you "taken this particular musical expression to heart"? I myself, know little to nothing in depth about hip-hop, and would love to learn more about it. You're welcome to start your own thread in a more appropriate forum/corner of this site. :)

Well, how about this- if a hip-hop song endures for long enough, eventually it could possibly be termed as 'classic hip-hop', which is just two letters away from 'classical hip-hop.' :p:grin:

Wow, that`s a lot of Mozart!

For me today it was William Walton`s Violin Concerto. I think it was Nigel Kennedy playing! Lovely stuff by this English composer. So then I listened to his Five Bagatelles for Guitar, played by Julian Bream. Apparently Walton wrote them for him. The Violin Concerto he wrote for Heifetz.

unfortunately I seem to spend too much time looking for undiscovered geniuses on forums or trying to write my own stuff just now. The last piece on CD I put on was the Brahms sextets a few days ago already!

Today listening to organist Virgil Fox Encores on CD. Virgil Fox (deceased) was one of two greats from whom I patterned my own playing style from. The other was the late organist E. Power Biggs, who was famous for an exact opposite of playing style that Fox exhibited.

Try not to spill any of that food you`re eating on your new acquisition, gio. :p:grin:

Hi Ms. RoJo,

No probs with food spillage my dear - the only prob is tearing myself away from listening to such glorious music and returning to the process of memorizing all the Organ/Keyboard music of Charles Tournemire.

Cheers,

Giovanni :tiphat:

Bach-Mass In B Minor by Eugen Jochum-Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.Jochum is excellent. He is the most spiritual conductor i know.

Beethoven-Symphony No.5 by Kurt Masur-New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Masur do not rush the symphony but his interpretation of this eternal piece somehow manages to sound boring.

Berlioz-Symphonie Fantastique by Mariss Jansons-Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. Excellent recording of my favourite conductor and favourite orchestra.Mariss Jansons & Concertgebouworkest is a marriage made in heaven.

Mendelssohn-A Midsummer Nights Dream by Andre Previn-London Symphony Orchestra.Very enjoyable indeed.

Mahler-Symphony No.2 by Otto Klemperer-Philharmonia Orchestra.
Mahler-Symphony No.9 by Bruno Walter-Wiener Philharmoniker
Both are sublime performances of Mahler.

Now the Bach B minor Mass ... that's serious listening taking place. I once heard this performed live - I was never so bored to tears in my life. Perhaps it was the group or conductor, the names of which escape me as this was like almost 40 years ago. I've not heard it since.

Mendelssohn - and Andre Previn - terrific performance indeed.

Today I listened to Shostakovich's fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth symphonies - you could say that I am thoroughly *Russified* after this *listening fest*.

Cheers!

Why only odd numbered symphonies, gio?

Which one did you enjoy the most?

Been missing you round here the past little while, gio; glad you`re back posting again! :)

Hi Ms. RoJo,

I have been so superbusy as of late and still haven't caught up with all the tasks I have before me. So pardon if my posting is sporadic at best. To answer why only odd-numbered symphonies: Because I'm odd :p  :D

Well, really, because those are imho the more gripping. Shostakovich's 13th symphony is my favorite - Bass soloist - Male voice choir. The poetry by Yevgeny Yevtuschenko on *Babiy Yar* - It just floors me. Shostakovich had a singular hatred for Stalin - almost all of S's music (excepting a few works) is a scathing condemnation of Soviet Communism.

Here are the words to *Babiy Yar*:

Be well and do senselessly random acts of kindness and good works my friend...

Tchaikovsky-Symphony No.2 "Little Russian" & Symphony No.6 "Pathetique" performed by Carlo Maria Giulini-Philharmonia Orchestra.I believe Giulini is not as popular as he should be.His Tchaikovsky is very exciting just like his every recording i own.
