• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

Different temperaments in composite sample

Hi all,

Recently I made a "composite" sample set for personal use based on different free demo sample sets from Sonus Paradisi. Now I run into problems because some sample sets have different temperament. For example Kzeszow and Dom Bedos has meantone, Smecno has historical quarter-comma meantone and most of the other ones are equal tempered.

Upto now I adjusted every rank on A=440. However due to the different temperaments some combinations of ranks on other notes sounds more or less out of tune.

As far as I understand this can be corrected by adding the HarmonicNumber for each rank (only one per rank, before the pipe definitions) and for the none equal tempered ranks define the PitchCorrection for each pipe.

I wonder if I can base this PitchCorrection on an available list where for a lot of different temperaments the correction in cents for one octave is given. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/qdy6wse8rtzdfba/Temperaments.pdf?dl=0)

Any suggestion would be appreciated!

Best regards,
Dries Nelemans

You overwork much too much! Most of the time the samplesets of Sonus Paradisi has the pitch information already embedded with the sample. You just add the correct HarmonicNumber for every Rank/Stop and all temperaments (except Original) will play just fine together. This of course assumes that you didn't erase the pitch info from the original samples...

If you want to make the Original temperament playable too you can adjust the tuning on a per pipe level with Pipe999PitchTuning= the amount of cents up or down. This is a bit tedious to do by hand (to say the least). I'll try to remember to change the batch process for that in LoopAuditioneer to just compare with equal temperament and a1=440 Hz with the next release and write the necessary lines (at present it gives tuning up and down to the closest semitone, which may or may not work for you)...

Kind regards
