Purchasing Beginner Violin

Hello all, my first time here. A lover of music like the rest I've always fiddled around with various instruments, but I digress. As Christmas comes around I've decided, knowing that my girlfriend has a deep love of the violin, that I would like to get her one so that she might be able to practice and start learning. Realizing she would just be a beginner I'm not looking for anything fancy or flashy. I merely want something with quality and reliability that is affordable. I would really like an idea of some good starter choices based on knowledge and experience of them. An additional question being that my girlfriend is left handed, so would it need to be set up for her being left handed (I have heard however that some left handed people prefer to learn right handed) Any insight on this? Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to your comments.

Having played viola and string bass in my college days.. I would suggest contacting the strings teacher at your local school/college and they can point you in right direction . Music stores are good but usually more expensive because of profit. AS every instrument has its own unique sound a lot depends on the individual instrument more so than brand ( altho some produce better instruments than others) that lies within your budget as you can spend 1000's of dollars if you have it. My viola I picked up as used for less than a $100.00 and had a great sound and lasted me through college ( got from school sale ). SO check around.. even pawn shops get good deals at times.. look at them and try them out and maybe have the one you liked checked by professional teacher etc. Good luck.
