Help neede on "In goede harmonie" by Matter/Molennaar

    Hi everybody.
I try to learn how to harmonize a church song through the interresting little book by Bert Matter and Peter Molenaar I mentionned in the title.
If anybody knows this book and has the skills, can you tell me in which key is writen psalm 77 page 37?
There is a flat, so it could be in Dm or F. It really sounds minor, but it starts and ends on G. From time to time, there is an F# ....
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Alain.

    Hi Alain,

it is in Dorian mode on G - you will find e instead of e flat (what you would expect in G minor) and f instead of f# - although there are some f#. Just the exceptions to the rule...

    Best regards

Thank you for your answer, Michael. I had noted that it looked like G dorian (F from the second note), but I doubted because I thought that, in liturgical music, the harmony was closer to gregorian modes. And I could'nt relate this melody to any gregorian mode but, perhaps, the 8th mode.
Anyway, since you seem to have Matter/Molenaar's book, have you also Peter Molenaar's book "Thema met variaties" that I can't find anywhere?

The title looks promising, but it seems that "thema met variaties" is out of print. I got "in goede harmonie" from a library - fortunately in a German translation. Reading Dutch is possible for me, but very, very difficult... If reading German is possible for you, I can recommend:

Christiane Michel-Ostertun, Intonationen - Anleitungen und Tips für leichte Intonationen auf der Orgel

She shows how to derive play overs from the chorale book settings. Very instructive and pragmatic approach.

Peter Molenaar's book is out of print, but perhaps somebody will be able to supply a scan....
It seems that Christiane Michel-Ostredun is a specialist in organ improvisation. I don't read German, but I will perhaps by her book wich is very cheep.
    Thank you for the information.

Erm, even though out of print, if the copyright is still in force, scanning a copy to give or sell to someone would be illegal ... the punishment for ignoring copyright laws can be rather stiff ... huge fines and/or prison time. Be careful ... and be forewarned.

This forum, it's owners and administrators, fully support any/all copyright laws of all countries. Before making a copy of a copyrighted work as yourself, "would I be willing to work for free?" I don't think so ... and that is what happens when something like this is copied ... you haven't paid for it ... you got if for free ... the composer/author/musician has all lawful rights to be compensated for their creative arts/works.
