I felt the two parts contrasted beautifully. I was pleasantly surprised by the entire piece - kudos.

Hennavank, I appreciate your feedback very much and I'm glad you find the first movement exciting. The choral parts of the second movement are indeed "simpler" but that is intentional, increasing their contrast and providing a sort of "time out" of reflexion from the ongoing battle. Perhaps some of them could have been even more subdued and distant yet intense (also production wise) to emphasize that, and perhaps there's room for some minor revisions. With that said, not least the ending (starting at approx. 11:12 and the build-up up to the pinnacle at 12:42) I do consider very good in my own humble opinion

    Best regards,
    Frederik
I may have not chanced upon it yet if ever it is already posted, but do you have the lyrics (English) which I can follow and thus understand more? Chorale lyrics are usually less clear since the grand music is almost always the concentration...or for lack of clear hearing too

Thanks for the great comments, falcon, phani_b4u, and clairec23!

C5, the lyrics are from Psalm 27:

[1] The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
[2] When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
[3] Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
[4] One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
[5] For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
[6] And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
[7] Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
[8] When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
[9] Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
[10] When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
[11] Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
[12] Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
[13] I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
[14] Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

It's my first opinion to you, Frederik Magle

    Receive my salute, Frederik.

Well, I'm not a musician, I'm a photographer. I begin to listen to you today, in my searching of the newest music. I listened some excerpts, and I have to say you, I'm very well impressioned because your music has the flavour of XXI century, with a true esence of the clasicism. I use to listen some musicians like Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and Michael Nyman. I don't know if the music stores sells your records in Mexico City, but I would like to buy someone. Its a pleasure to listen your compositions. I would like you tell me another compositors, like the musicians to having influence in you.
Do you have listened the Danzon of Arturo Marquez? Or the Concertino for Organ and orchestra of Miguel Bernal Jiménez? They're two examples for Contemporary Mexican Music that I likes a lot.

    Thanks, from Mexico.

    Argentik.

    The Hope

Just discovered this incredible work for brass, organ, percussion & choir. It really does conjur up a picture of war at sea in those days. My great great great Grandfather was serving on board HMS St. George in this battle so the music has an added special meaning for me.

Fantastic.....I've lost count of how many times I have listened to it. Many thanks for making it availlable through this site.

    Regards. Jim.

...And just an update to let you know "The Hope" can now also be downloaded in either of the lossless formats; FLAC, Apple Lossless, or uncompressed WAV (I've updated the first post on page one in this thread with the new links).

I'm very happy to announce that "The Hope" has been published by the renowned publisher Edition Wilhelm Hansen! The score and parts of the extended version (full brass band) is available worldwide now. The original (smaller version) will be available sometime next year.
