Liszt took the theme from a chorale which is sung in the first act of Mayerbeer's opera "La Prophete". The chorale is called: »To us, to the saving waters, (come again, O ye miserable people)«. I've also seen it translated as: »Come to us, to the waves of salvation«, but the meaning is the same.
