Looking for Violin/Piano Repertoire

My wife, a pianist, and a violinist will be giving a concert in December, and they are looking for violin & piano repertoire that features both instruments, as distinguished from violin with piano accompaniment. Though they are professional musicians with a lot of experience, this is a new direction for them, and they do not know what scores to look for. (They are also very busy, which is why I, a mere photographer:ut:, offered to help in the search.)

The repertoire may be limited, and we will welcome any suggestions at all. If there is more out there than I think, then it would be good to select music which fits well with their propensity -- and wonderful gifts -- for the lyrical.

Thanks!

I don't know near as much about violin/piano repetoire as I do about solo piano, but from what I've heard, the Beethoven and Schubert sonatas would be great choices.

EDIT: I'm listening to Schubert's Violin Sonata in D Op. posth. 137 No. 1 right now. It's short may be just what you're looking for.

Well, may I suggest Frederik Magle`s 'Journey in Time' for violin and piano? Great piece, lyrical, and both parts are interesting. Here`s a link to a free excerpt-

http://www.magle.dk/journey_in_time.html

There`s also Poulenc`s Sonata for Violin and Piano, and the shorter Bagatelle in d minor for Violin and Piano. I`m more familiar with some other works by him, but the piano parts in his works are much more than mere accompaniment; the parts are generally of equal importance. Plus his works are very lyrical.

That`s what springs to mind; I may come up with more. Anyway, hope this helps!

Hi Dhabercom,

In one of my searches for downloadable music, I stumbled across this site: http://www.MutopiaProject.org/ which features sheet music of 10 different genre that are solely in the Public Domain, and as such, are free sheet music. One can search by composer, instrument, or style, and even get a little preview of the piece before downloading the entire file.

Hope this helps you out on your searching.

Do look into Cesar Franck's Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano - it is simply ravishing and always, always, always a crowd pleaser.
