Dear C5Says and marval,

At the top of any page of any thread, there are a few buttons for various things. One of them is a "Search this thread" button. Press that and you get a little field that you can type words into. If you type in John Adams or Franz Schubert, you find that both of those names have already been used, both in 2006, when this thread began.

So, everyone, we're still at "a."

No. Ives has already been used. 2006.

Anyway, here's one that hasn't been used, familiar to anyone who's been following the Japanese line of Naxos:

Akira Ifukube

So the next letter is really "E" not "S."

Gerald Eckert (German, studied with Dirk Reith.) Eckert writes both instrumental and electroacoustic music--and sometimes both together, of course. His discs are few and not that easy to find, at least here in the U.S., but if you find one, snap it up. His music is pretty consistently good. (col legno, Composers Art Label, and cybele.)

(As Udyret and marval have shown us recently, a few words of orientation are nice.)

((Aaron, by the way, spelled his name without an "e." For a composer named Copeland, you have to go to Canada. Darren Copeland, who studied with Barry Truax.))
