Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900), composer of 23 operas including the Pirates of Penzance.
I guess there are no "U" names for English composers, so to best keep this moving along, I suggest we move on to "V" - ok with everyone?

William Walton. People write curious things in CD sleeve notes. In a recording of Walton's first symphony, the author writes: "Walton was only 30 when he came to write his First Symphony, yet it marks the peak of his career." I guess this implies that the composer went down hill after he reached that age.

Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938). He wrote a doctoral thesis called "Essay on Greek dance." Then completed numerous books, including biographies of Berlioz and Franck, along with a history of the musical language. Was professor of the history of music at the Conservatoire, where he taught Olivier Messiaen.
I enjoy his symphonies, such as the number 2 called "Bretonne," and hope to hear more of his music.
