Mahler's 3rd Symphony

I have not heard Mahler's 3rd symphony yet and i do not want to start with a bad performance and grow a bad taste of this symphony so can you people advise me some recordings of it?

For a brazenly emotional take, any of Bernstein's takes should do, with the final DG rcording in the best sound. For a cooler, more precise, splendidly recorded version, I'd say that Esa-Pekka Salonen is the way to go. (It's my personal favorite version of one of my least favorite of Mahler's symphonies.) Kent Nagano's take is theatrical and in fine sound, too.

I think i'll go with Salonen.I listened to Bernstein's accounts of Mahlers 2nd,6th and 9th symphonies and liked neither.I think his approach to Mahler is absurdly over-praised(Yes!Yes!Yes!I said at last!!!).Did you hear Rattle's version?If yes what do you think of it?I do not like his touch also but sometimes he produces special things (rarely i must say)

I have the Maazel recording which I frankly cannot recommend.

After listening to his 1st and 5th Maazel did not seemed the best of Mahlerians to me either.

Try Boulez. The only version I has is him with the New York Philharmonic, in a live broadcast, but he made it work.

Yes,not bad indeed but i could not find the New York Philharmonic got the Vienna account instead

I find his interpretation (at the least the one I have on disc) doesn't smack of oversentimentality. He plays the music for what it is, with a fine attention to detail.

And although the Vienna is a fine orchestra, from what I've heard before I find their brass section somewhat lacking.

However, good listening!
