Painting and Sculpture as Music

I've often been curious of whether or not a composer could be as taken by another composer, to complete engulf the substance of their style? Many seem keen, especially the scholarly, to continue the the legacy of Bach. But what about Bruckner or Mahler. I'm also interested in if it was possible to incorperate other arts into music from a painting to sculpture, such as Rodin or Klimt. To actually try and merge with their technique and morph into a different art form. If anyone can name an example of composers who have done this it would be interesting to know.

I assume you are not referring to music inspired by paintings (of which there are many), but for instance a concerto for sculptor and orchestra? Intriguing idea, but I don't think I have ever come across something like this.
