Yes, I believe that it is a symphonic wind ensemble. Or at least thats what it sounds like. You'd have to hear it...

I'm not to sure about that part. I just went to Google and searched for it until I found a website with it.

    Ok... I found it here:
    http://www.musicstore.jp/~tohru/toccata.eng.html

There's also an mp3 to download.

It seems to be an entirely Japaneese ensemble from Osaka Junior College of Music.

    Forgive me for butting in,
But if the d minor is from "Phantom", isn't it the Fugue from the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor?

Seems to me that's the one I remember being played in the Phantom sequences, anyway.

    Live yer bliss!

"Phantom"? is that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Musical "Phantom of the Opera" you're talking about?

The Toccata in the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johan Sebastian Bach shares a resemblance with the "phantom sequence" in the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, but nothing more than a resemblance.

Yes! Thats the one. I do like it though. I guess that I didn't see that it was Japanese. I just like it better when played on the organ.

Then again, it's hard to tell. I really like the deep and middle voices in the piece. (Especially the Horn :P)

My favorite piece is Franz Biebl's arrangement of Ave Maria. The arrangement is simple but complex, and always moves me, even if I'm in the choir singing it.

Well... this transcription of the Toccata and Fugue is actually very nicely done - it's not always a succes when somethings arranged for another ensemble than what it's intended for.

    Hi Claire,

Which Ave Maria are we talking about here? the Schubert or the Bach/Gounod? or something else?

Edit: Well, I did a search for it on Google and it seems it's an original composition by him - not an arrangement as such.
Here's a link for anyone else who want's to know more about this piece: http://www.cantusquercus.com/ave.htm and about Bliebl himself: http://www.cantusquercus.com/features.htm and http://www.cantusquercus.com/biebl.htm - and there's probably a lot more, but this is where I found the information about the Ave Maria.

I would recommend Ray Lynch's: "The Oh of Pleasure," From the album named "Deep Breakfast." Trust me when I say it's a good track from that album. I also recommend "Tiny Geometries" from that same album.

    Peace out,
    CB.

Try Elizabeth Schwarzkopf's Four Last Songs on 566908-2, written incredibly when the composer was in his eighties. Beim Schlafengehen is particularly beautiful.

If you are not trying to encapsulate a single emotion then certainly the Bach. If you like baroque then try Albinoni's Adagio recorded by Karajan with the BPO on DG 413309-2: solemly suitable for a wedding or a funeral (!) It is the best baroque sampler available in my opinion; it also has Bach's Air. I've just put it on to check and I was right!

Also try Wagner's Siegfried Idyll or Mahler's Adagietto (Fifth Symphony)

    Regards
