Indian film music

Indian films have a characteristic feature in them. They have songs. These songs are put in with relevance to the situation in the film e.g. there would be a happy song when the film needs to show a celebration or marriage and accordingly a sad song in a sad situation. Thus we have a large heritage of beautiful songs with all kinds of emotions.

much of the music in Indian films are absolutely IRRELEVANT to the overall context of the storyline/movie! very rarely do filmmakers do justice by thematically linking music scores with the subject matter or the characters on screen - especially last few years, it is 'music' for the sake of it! no thematic development - in simplere words, much of it is JUNK

I wouldn't agree with that. Yes there is a lot of trash music in some of the Hindi films. But there are equal number or even more good movies which contain good music which not only contains good lyrics but good music too. Also these are relevant to the situation. Of course, you would need to understand Hindi to feel it.

Hi

Hi All,
I am Jagadeesh from Chicago. Came from India recently. I am extensive lover of music. I am mad of Ilayaraja especially. Would like to share all my feelings of music.

Coming to the relevance of songs in our movies...see...any industry will have to face this issue. Sometime or the other, irrelevance will come into picture, especially in our movies, becuase our movies are more commercial oriented. But as you said, we have to focus more on the story line which shud be more powerful..

Hi Jagdeesh, Welcome. Its great to have you here. I like Illyaraja too. Good to know you are a great music lover. This site is meant for music lovers and I guess contains all the topics on music under sun.
Yes you are right about relevance. There are many movies which just focus on music and the movie may not work but the music becomes a hit.
I loved music of Parineeta", "Kal ho na ho" and "Kabhi alvida na kehna". I think the lyrics were great too.

Hindi film music I think is catchy and good if not excellent. I can't imagine a world without Hindi music. We have songs for all occasions and all festivals and all emotions. Yes there are songs which do not rate high on music or lyrics but on the whole I think this music is good. One does not need to be trained in music or be an expert to like music. Any thing which touches the heart serves the purpose.
