Joe Zawinul - keyboards and composer of the best bass lines ever!
Jaco Pastorius - bass player who played all the music whatever the genre.

put them together and you get Weather Report!

Spot on! Weather Report is probably one of the greatest jazz/fusion groups ever put together. I'm just not sure if that is the "correct" term to use in describing them. However, whatever term may be used, they were simply awesome. Wayne Shorter and Josef Zawinul are sheer geniuses. I'm very tempted to use the term "progressive jazz" in this context, yes?

I think Zawinul and WR's music defies description. He once said he invented World Music before it became a fashionable term. I suppose it's jazz at the end of the day! But there are a lot of classical elements as he was classically trained. The best music needs no labelling...

Gareth, excellent point, which I whole heartedly agree with. Either the music "has it" or it doesn't. End of story, I should think, yes?
