• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Songbook Recommendations

I would be quite interested in any suggestiongs anyone might have concerning a good, dependable hymnal. I'm primarily interested in ones with the "older" hymns like Charles Wesley, Martin Luther, and even older than that and not really the newer praise songs. I think that there are some wonderful, older hymns that are out there but just not well known. I don't collect hymnals so I don't really run in the circles where people are collecting hundreds--;) ---so maybe those that have them could make a recommendation. Many thanks! Bill

I really don't know too much about the US Hymn tradition, but I've used such things as Hymns ancient and modern, and the Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised.

There's an even newer version than that in circulation now in the Anglican Church, but I can't say that I'm familiar with it at all. (only seen it once and then not the music version...)

I would suspect that A&MR could possibly fit the bill quite well. (assuming you can still get it???????)

Added, Don't be confused by the modern in the title, It certainly doesn't contain any of the contemporary worship songs, and I think modern probably refers to just a bit less than a century old. And does include all the Wesley tunes etc. in abundance. Not sure about Luther though, given that it is in the English Tradition rather than mainland European.

Thank you very much for that recommendation--I will have to look into it. Generally, I'm not too keen on the idea of transposing older hymns with newer tunes, ect. Is this an Anglican songbook?
These songbooks are getting harder to find, I think. :)

Yes - It's the Hymnal I grew up with in the Anglican Church. Don't know how easy it will be to get though. A&MR has probably been around for about 60-70 years now I would think. I used to posess a copy but it's gone AWOL over the years unfortunately - in fact very unfortunately not least because it's one of the most accurate, comprehensive and well laid out traditional hymnals I've ever seen...

Sadly though - my church (well the priest anyway) seems to think that anything that sounds even remotely like a hymn is banned, if it was written in the last 30-40 years ok, if it includes a guitar even better, and if the words and especially the 'tune' are particularly nauseous and banal - perfect. In fact I'm sure he considers that music in the service is an unwelcome interruption to preaching, and services tend to be an +/- hour's sermon broken up by the obligitory few 'songs' (presumably designed to stop people going comletely off to sleep) and an occasional prayer...

Fortunately I have a fair few allies in the old guard (who actually run the place) so I can at least manage to fit in some things that aren't completely muscally bankrupt.

Yr welcome Bill. In fact I'm ordering up a replacement to my own copy along with a few other things I need personal copies of. I'm doing so much playing all over the place atm. and sometimes they just don't seem to have music editions available. I did one yesterday where I was presented with a top line edition (melody only) and told that was the music book. - Nothing quite like a bit of keyboard harmony at sight (coz I didn't know the songs) at 9.30 in the morning to wake you up in a hurry... (I've decided to keep a few full music editions in the Boot of the Car for such occasions... ;) )
