Vaughan Williams suggestions

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and a bit of a classical music novice...

Anyway, I've been listening to Vaughan Williams recently, particularly his better known works such as The Lark Ascending, Tallis, Symphonies etc.

Who are some other composers similar to Vaughan Williams that you would recommend listening to?

I'm particularly interested in long, moving pieces that work well with film.

Welcome to MIMF. We are certainly please that you have joined this music forum and hope your time with us will be a pleasurable experience.

Certainly RVW has written some wonderful works ... others in his simalar genre, that of being English, were Walton, Delius and Holst.

How about the rest of the group here ... more suggestions for Stuart?

In addition to Delius and Holst (who wrote much more than the Planets): Finzi, Moeran (excellent!), Leighton, Bliss, Butterworth, Bantock, Bax (beautiful symphonies and tone poems!) come to mind.

I would not have included Walton as similar, but of you do, you can throw in Bridge as well.

If you haven't heard the Vaughan Williams oboe concerto, I highly recommend it. I think it is a fantastic piece. I'm not too familiar with composers similar to Vaughan Williams however.

Try the slow movement of either of Edward Elgar's symphones ... (he wrote two). They are powerful, expansive and very, very moving.
