• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

movie films & pipe organs

Many, many years ago I watched a foreign film (non-English) about a man, in an earlier century, who beautifully played a pipe organ in a small church in a small village... Unfortunately, I do not remember a whole lot about the plot, but the basic story line was that he was driven from the town, I think due to his unorthodox style of playing the instrument... the man experienced many hardships, during the middle parts of the film, but I vividly remember the movie concluding with the man finding an opportunity to play one of the largest pipe organs in a cathedral somewhere in Europe. It was one of the most impressive music pieces I had ever heard in my life! Those witnessing the event at the church, were completely overwhelmed by the performance that they could only respond in blank wonderment. The music so moved me, I could not stop thinking about it for weeks!
This was a old black-and-white film, and the preservation quality of the film was not great.. but I think in some ways it added to the atmosphere of the film. My best guess is the film was made in the 30's or 40's, but I'm not sure. I have searched for it using "plot" key words in movie data bases, and I also searched for it on the general internet; but so far, no luck. I unfortunately do not have a title for the movie, so the task of locating it is especially difficult. If anyone has any information that could assist me with locating this film, I would be very grateful! I also would highly recommend the film to all that have any interests in pipe organs. :)

Hello sunshadow, and Welcome to Magle Int'l Music Forums.

Hmmm, sounds alot like my life story, sans playing in an European cathedral ...  . Seriously though, your quest for information is certainly welcome here, and although I don't have a definitive answer, there are some here who might.

You might also try posting this in Movies & Film Music Forum here within MIMF.

Hello sunshadow. I know the movie you are talking about, and I too, have tried many avenues to find out what movie it is .If you have found the answer please let me know.To add to the plot , the movie was in Austria . The young man was shunned by the local organ player out of jealousy. He was not allowed to play , or repair the organ in his village. Then one day an administrator from Salzburg or Viennna , was taking a general census of organs in the area for what ever reason, and stumbled upon the lad who had repaired the organ without permission , and herad him play and invited him to a contest the rest you know. To my recolection , the film I saw was in color and had english subtitles. It begs the question in my mind , if their was a remake of the movie , as the sound quality was quite good. I also recall in the end something about his eyes changing colors when he died.

Hello!

Thanks, everyone, for your replies! I had lost track of this website (and my post) until just recently.

Unfortunately, I have not had any success locating the film...

* music4all * Thank you for higher quality recollection of the film... It does appear to be, in fact, the same film I was trying to locate. I believe I probably did see the same version of the film (if multiples exist) and that it was probably in color.... although the quality of the film I saw, I think, resulted in the colors being "washed out" and so they were not very vivid, which probably affected my memory. :)

If anyone ever determines the name of this film, I'm still very interested in tracking it down!

Hi Sunshadow and Lordwarzrip,

My guess is that the film you are seeking is "Schlafes Bruder", or "Brother of Sleep" from 1995. There is a brief extract at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzfBGJD4zF0&feature=related that may help you decide. You should be able to find more details on the web from this title, but beware that there may be more than one movie of the same name. The music near the end of the film is a tocatta by Enjott Schneider.

Regards,
Diode

Thank You In Abundance.. Although with a few details that Sunshadow provided which I myself could not recall, I had no trouble finding it on the internet. It is Shlafes Bruder, thank you anyway for your insight. God Bless!!!
