• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Current Composers of Organ Music

Are these all composing in a modern style?
Contemporary or modern music is terrible!
I just recently discovered these modern/contemporary composers, along with the horrible modern American-style instruments the music is often played on, with reeds which sound like they are made out of plastic.
No offense to the lovers of that stuff but it is very different from the historical organ music!!
Only historical European organs (or instruments voiced in the style) and no music post-18th century for me please.
Meantone temperaments are nice too!

I think we need to be more clear about what we are talking about - and it is probably 20th century music you are talking about. This compositional style can no longer be considered "contemporary" as its heyday was in the 1960s. There are a few composers still holding to those ideals, but I don't think it describes the majority of active composers.

Also about the American organs - which builders are you refering to? I ask because I have a particular interest in American organ building.

Can I see/hear your works?

I'll put my hand up as a yes to that question. I've also written a number of organ solo pieces, but nothing published (I'm open to suggestions!). They've all received favourable reviews and comments at performances here and abroad.
Apologies for the long delay in replying. I have been seriously busy (enough of the excuses)
Can you direct me to where I might find more info re your [pipe organ and electronic] compositions.
I am working on a DMA in Queensland on this topic. It is really quite interesting and incredibly open-ended. However...:)

I look forward to your response (hopefully quite soon)

A fantastic contemporary composer of organ music is Francis Pott. His Magnum Opus is entitled "Christus" - here's a url devoted to him and his music:

Wow, sounds incredible the opening from "Christus". I´d better get more into this pipe organ music, actually introduced to me on CD by Sir Frederik from his improvisations. Thanks!!

French organ composer

Hello
I am a french composer and many pieces of my organ works have been released in this forum. My latest music (feb 2008 is a wedding march, written for Jonesey, see his thread "weddings" in pipe organ forum
You can also hear MP3 and download free PDF scores at

http://musicalis.monespace.net/pages/11.html (about 20 scores).

there are also some others pieces in the pages dedicated to virtual organ :
http://musicalis.monespace.net/pages/47.html.

I am sorry if the MP3 are not very good as played by a sequencer, but because of illness, I cannot play organ anymore myself.

Hi Intet, CT64,

Its my pleasure to have helped you both in discovering Francis Pott. I have been working on learning and memorising "Christus" - man, its a tough work - ties ones fingers in a knot but at the same time its a thrill when playing it.

Cheers,

CD :):):)

I've just noticed an error in a post earlier in this thread (admittedly not relevant to the subject matter). However, the organ referred to is significant, and is in a significant building. The large tracker pipe organ in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall was built not by Roger Pogson but by Ron Sharp. "Weak"? It probably depends on where you're sitting. Also, the construction of the hall ceiling is such that the deep sounds get lost.

a couple of videos you might like to look at -

Have a look at my website for some recent performances of new (and not so new) organ performances. The video of 8 Panels was recorded in the Melbourne Town Hall (Australia) in October 2007 in conjunction with the SIAL Sound Studios of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. It was a work that ran for nearly 40 minutes - though only a small section is given here.
The other video is a performance from July 2008 on the Peter Collins organ in Toorak Uniting Church. I am playing the Ligeti Etude 'Harmonies' - and the sound is correct - Ligeti asks that the wind supply be greatly reduced to starve the organ of wind. Has an amazing effect on the sound as the registration changes. Registration assistants are absolutely needed as the piece has 10 note chords throughout, and continual changes in sound.
There are some other interesting videos and audio sounds in Jean Penny's pages too.

Enjoy!
Andrew
