What do I need?

I'm after some advice on what software/hardware I need.
My music is in the same vain as NIN and Ministry, the foundations of which I created on the Playstation2 using MTV Music Generator2 which I found extreamly limited. So I got hold of a mid-priced PC but was then overwhelmed by the amount of software avalable, which sound card, terminology etc...

What I want to be able to do I play instuments and samples directly into my PC and arrange and structure everything on the computer, basicly turn it into a recording studio.
Can anyone give me any advice on afordable software and anything else I would need to acheavie this.

If you play guitar, check into the M-Audio stuff. They sell a 99$ usb box that you can plug your guitar right into, its actually the soundcard. As far as reasonably priced sw, theres Cubase SE, also 99$. Very easy to use, and you can track anything you can plug into the MAudio box. Im a Logic user, but I bought my son a setup like I mentioned, he records and plays alot, but at home for writting, thats what he uses.
