    I had NO idea that swell flaps were so thick, I'd never paid attention before, obviously, when crawling around inside an organ.

    Hi CT, sure, I like Tom better than Thomas.

    Swell flaps can be all different thicknesses and materials. Different kinds produce different effects. I've heard of builders using insulation, even, to try to muffle the sound as much as possible when the shades were closed. It depends on the kind of instrument. The early 20th century "orchestral" instruments tended to use the thickest materials to try to produce the greatest difference possible between open and closed shades.
