The best singer of the 80's is without a doubt Freddy Mercury. He can't be touched.

to me he's more a singer from the seventies, since he achieved so beautiful things during that period, but yeah, i guess he can't be touched by many people.
Im agreeing with pink floyd Ofcourse !
The lead singer of Go West. Very good voice.
I'd have to go with Sting also. One of my personal favorites.
Sorry,
I dont care for Sting even though he comes from my home town and I was a friend of his father.
In the 80s I was by preference still listening to Sinatra, Jack Jones, Ella and Sarah Vaughan and above all Louis Armstrong.
Although I agree with the positive comments about Freddie Mercury, Stevie Nicks, and the Waters/Gilmour duo from Pink Floyd, I also agree that these are more like 70s acts than 80s acts.
When 'short-listing' the male vocalists, Simon LeBon from Duran Duran was the first name that I considered. I'll grant that Sting is a better songwriter, more influential artist etc. etc. However, he did not have a better voice than Simon LeBon.
Bruce Springsteen can be put in the category of 'characterful' voices, e.g.: Bob Dylan, or Robert Smith from The Cure. Let's put it this way- the matter of whether any of these three had better 'vocal chops' than Michael Jackson is pretty much a closed issue.![]()
The truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the lies you can invent- William Blake, from Auguries of Innocence
I'll admit that I'm heavily influenced as Sting for my choice for his songwriting ability, matched with his vocal performance so maybe it's not a fair statement to cast my vote for him if based solely on vocal ability. Although Duran Duran certainly have their merits and Simon Lebon had a good range I personally prefer Sting's voice. Just my 2 cents.
I watched a video by Flock of Seagulls and the abecederians with
Monarch on you tube and I found myself long for this decade like
someone missing their mother. There will not be another decade
like the 80s. I watched Wishing by Flock of Seagulls. The punk
groups.

Yup. The 80s are gone, but it sure is fun thinking about them, and wishing they'd come back!
I would say Pete Burns, the singer from Dead or Alive ... biggest hits : You spin me right round. Great voice.
Johnny
Hi to all!
For me great singer of the 80's is Peter Gabriel.
He had it all then : great voice, vocal technique, exellent performance (I've seen him live and I will never forget what I saw..) and good compositions.
Second and very close and a voice that remains forever in my heart and keeps me awake is Ronny James DIO. Just the best there is.
cheers
