Seen any good films lately?

Via Netflix, The Shawshank Redemption, with Morgan Freeman, James Whitmore, Jeffrey DeMunn and Tim Robbins.
This one was a bit of a stretch for me--as I guess a lot of King's work is meant to be--but the acting was superb and the story at least had a happy ending.

Very high in my all time top ten Steve and quite faithful to the novella it was adapted from. Loved it, loved the music, loved the acting and the scene setting. Who can forget the scene on the garage roof with the men sitting around drinking beer, and the MF voiceover was inspired.

It could be either spouse, in the film's context, as both the husband and wife are extremely egotistical and power hungry, whether or not it is at the expense of one another or their two sons.

The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis in a great non action part, very ably supported by Haley Joe Osment as the troubled young boy Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan who also went on to make Unbreakable with Willis. Has a real twist at the end and highly recommended.

Via Netflix,The Machinist, starring Christian Bale. Yikes! And I thought I had trouble falling asleep. :banghead:

On Netflix, Capote, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Chris Cooper and Francis McDormand. The inimitable and much missed Hoffman absolutely nailed this one; great supporting cast as well.

Once again, via Netflix, The Tenants, based on a Bernard Malamud short story, starring Rose Byrne, Snoop Dogg and Dylan McDermott. Set in an abandoned Brooklyn apartment building in 1972 in which writer McDermott {Harry Lesser} is the only remaining holdout, he is soon joined by another writer, played by Dogg {Willie Spearmint}. First "co-existing" as uneasy allies, they soon become arch-enemies, with deadly consequences for both. For me, the story is a kind of metaphor for the once cordial but then hostile symbiosis between the Jewish and black communities which echo down to today. Rose Byrne as Spearmint's white lover only adds to the volatility of this ever explosive mix. Now I shall definitely have to read the original Malamud short story.

Unbreakable - with Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson. Another film written, produced and directed by M Night Shyamalan.
An unusual slant on the idea of superheroes with a thought provoking idea behind it. Recommended

A GUNFIGHT starring Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas. Two aging gunfighters decide to do it for money and stage a gunfight in a bull ring. As well acted as you would expect from these two pros and nicely understated. Saw the very end of this film many years ago and have just caught up with it via YouTube.

Actually went to the cinema (moving pictures) to see the new Star Wars film. Good to see the original cast back again and sticking very much to the format of the original three films. The re-introduction of the Millennium Falcon was well handled and great to see my favourite character, Chewie, back as well. Did not like the loss of one of the main characters ( I suppose they might return through the magic of cinema) and I would imagine there will be a hand over, as there was in Star Trek between the old hands and the new ones, but a worth while film to watch if you like this genre.

About a week ago I watched "The Shawshank redemption" on TV I saw it a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it but this time it put me in a very dark place and I am only just getting over it. I hope I am not getting depression.

Sorry to hear that Colin. I am a great fan of Stephen King and have read, and own, many of his books. I believe that Shawshank is one of his best works and just about the best film adaption from one of his stories and ranks very highly in my list of top ten films. The voiceover by Morgan Freeman was inspired. It is also about hope and perseverance and has a happy ending including the baddies being brought to justice. Anyway, its just a film, nothing to get depressed about.

Yes the voice over was brilliant Teddy but something just got to me. I have not been in a cinema in 60 years or so.

There is no doubt hat the cinema can add something to a film. Butch Cassidy and also Lawrence of Arabia are far no enjoyable on the big screen where the scenery really stands out. I have to admit though that the convenience of home viewing, plus the cost, means that I rarely go to the cinema. Having said that the Carlton in Westgate on Sea charged me £7.60 for two tickets to see the new Star Wars film. That included the on line booking fee and the extra cost of the posh lounge seats. Not bad considering some places were charging £15.00 a ticket.
