Somehow, as he composed music that was tuneful and quirky he seems to be held in a slightly different esteem (by people of this BB) than, say Widor. Interesting to read that Franck held him in regard, Franck obviously had good taste. The one CD I own of his organ music played on that wonderful Cavaille-Coll organat the Madeliene is just beautiful, listen to it over and over.

    Hello CT64,

Thanks to the supreme artistry and musicianship of Jeanne Demessieux at the organ of La Madeleine in Paris I really became engrossed in the music of Franck. I have her LP's with the works of Franck. Excellent music excellently performed - no doubt about it!!!

    Cheers,

    Corno Dolce

    Corno - isn't that Madeleine organ sublime? I don't think Cavaille-Coll made a bad organ ever ...

    Hi CT64,

Oh yes, 'tis a sublime instrument in sublime acoustics. Some significant tonal additions had been made to that instrument which some say have had a deleterious effect to the ensemble. Oh well...Sigh...

    Humbly,

Not so from me CT64. I'm thinking different genre slightly, and one that crosses many boundaries. There were many various artistic movement that occured in France (thank God!) that produced some of the most interesting music/art/poetry/theatre/........... of all! I see him as part of that.

NEB - yep, and by me either - I love his music and will endeavour to find out a bit more about his compositions.

Our national classical music broadcaster (ABC Classic FM) played a piece for flute and piano by Widor the other morning ... was good to hear something that wasn't organ inspirred.

The organ used on Lef`ebure-wely. Well there goes the computer again!
The french word looks funny! The music starts out a bit heavy and breaks
into a polka like waltz. It's pretty! I wonder if there is the sheet music
    for this piece.

Sorry I ran out of time on that one! The library only gives so much
time on the computer and then it's over. Bummer! As I started to say
before time ran out was I've been working on a piece just as hard as
probably like the young guy was playing. Some pieces and songs are
like pulling teeth. I have taken a break from Toccata & Fugue during
the holiday season but soon after Jan,2,2008 the hard piece will start
up again with me playing it. I really enjoy it and listening to it.

    Hi all,

Kevin Mayhew do a super 'Essential lefebure-Wely'; cost me £20 ($40??). it contains 20 pieces, including the two sorties that we all know and love - and are harder to play well than some would give credit!
