Bach Gesellschaft edition

Being somewhat partial to Johan Sebastian's music I purchased (very cheaply I might add) the "complete Bach in PDF" called the Digital Bach Edition. It is totally based on the incredible 1890 Bach Gesellschaft edition. Unfortunately there is no English translation of any of the preface material, my German's poor but did manage to work out some luminaries that worked on this incredible (first) edition:

Dr. Franz Liszt (Weimar)
I. Moscheles (Leipzig)
Dr. R. Schumann (Dresden)
Dr. L. Spohr (Kassel)

Kewl, CT64 - I have the other two (French Romantic, Baroque) but wasn't aware of the complete JSB being available. I'll have to get that one ... actually prefer the Dupre' or Schweitzer editions (I have some of each in print), but those versions will be locked up in copyright protection for eons.

Indeed an impressive list of notables for that edition project.

Krommiest - and those were only the ones I knew of ... many others who were (still are) quite famous. I'm very tempted to get the complete Beethoven from that same, august, house.

I am a new member

A few years ago I purchased a pair of CD's proporting to have the collected works of Bach, from the Bach Gesellshaft edition. I believe I have found an error.

On Band 5a there is a copy of BWV29 - Cantata 29, that has the famous Sinfonia as its beginning selection. The Sinfonia begins on pg 275 and ends on pg 287. Unfortunately where pg 279 should be, pg 379 appears, which is a hugh blunder.

Can anyone steer me to a correct version of this Cantata?

John ... g'day and welcome to MIMF where you're be amused, entertained, educated, and occasionally outraged.

As to the error in the Bach - I'll have a look, I must say I can't imagine a tome like that NOT having an error or two considering the huge amount of music that was scanned and processed.

Of course, Cantata 29 is the famous one with the fiendishly difficult organ solo. Thither:

I just checked that file, John, and it's all there in my edition. I think that the version I purchased was their second edition ... obviously they fixed up some errors? Not sure.

Way to go, CT64. Great choice. I also have complete Beethoven's piano sonatas but those are too much of a challenge to me as for now... Currently I have been working on The Raindrop Preledue and few other Chopin's preludes.

What edition do you have and who is the publisher? It so happens that the edition I own is also posted on the web with the following URL and it has the same error on volume-5.1
