Hello:) help needed!

Hi,
I'm an 18 yr old student from Malaysia and hoping to further my studies in piano music abroad. The problem is that it's hard to get hold of comprehensive advice regarding good colleges/programmes. The only ones i hear of are well-known schools/unis such as Juilliard, Berklee, Melbourne Uni, etc. I would like to know more about music programmes in Europe and other countries.
I wish to study music performance, and later on specialise in Music Pedagogy. Just in case i might hit the jackpot, let me share a little more on what i would love to do. -working with special abilities children, art of teaching, English, international music.
So i was wondering if there would be a college where i could do all these. The main idea is studying piano music and English language, and also working towards being able to teach both of these subjects. I also hope to take German and Chinese lessons if possible.
Perhaps just a mention of a college/uni/conservatory you know of? I would be happy to check it out.
I hoped that by joining an international forum i may get some advice from music lovers around the world.
Am eagerly waiting for replies or comments! :)

Hi Jern, welcome to the addicting club (MIMF)! :)

Do you mean to say you will go out of your country if you find one that suits your needs?

Hello and welcome, its so nice to have you here :)

Unfortunately, I am from one of those school that you have mentioned above, so I wouldnt really be able to tell you much about other colleges. I do not know much about Berkeley's music program (I think it is good, but I was not a part of it in any way), but Im more than sure you can find all of those things that you listed (working with special abilities children, art of teaching, English, international music.) there.

Europe? There are many: England: Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal College of Music (both in London). Really, the list goes on and on.

try looking at Indiana University at Bloomington. I'm quite positive they offer everything you are looking for. The music school of IU is called Jacobs School of Music, it is a very top tier school, I personally would like to go there for composition. Also look at Oberlin, Bard, Uni of Rochester/Eastman school of music, Northwestern University, Michigan Uni, Miami State, these are all in the U.S. of course
Good luck in your future endeavors, hope this helps in your decision

Hello jern,

Welcome aboard the Starship MIMF where everyone is a star. Please do make yourself feel right at home. You have an interesting forum "name" - jern in Swedish means Iron.

Two other excellent Schools of Music are Rice University in Houston, Texas and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in San Francisco, California. All the best I wish you in finding and getting accepted to the School of your choice.

Cheers :tiphat::tiphat::tiphat:

Hi Muza, thank you for your comments. Yes, i've been keeping Berklee as one of my top preference. The only thing i'm concerned about is if i'm good enough to get to a reputable school ^.^. Looks like i gotta work real hard.

To Mahlon, thanks alot for your helpful suggestions. Am checking out the said Music schools. I've heard that music schools in the US are rather commercialized. I know it is a rather general statement, what do you think? Because of that i have somehow gotten the impression that the best place to do music is in Europe, namely Germany, Austria and Prague? But then again i heard US and Australia are good places to study music too. Hmm..would love to hear further comment in this area.

To Corno Dolce, thanks for your reply:) Jern is actually my name in Chinese, so it's really interesting to know what it means in Swedish. Rice Uni seems like a very pretty place. And the facility is also impressive. Will definitely look into further detail as to the programmes they offer. I noticed many uni webpages do not offer a very detailed course description. But for now i'm just planning to widen my knowlegde of the colleges around, so you guys have been a great help. Thanks, and am eager to know more about other colleges in the US as well as other countries :)
