• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Coming Out Of The Closet...

Alright gang,

I can't take it anymore - I have to come out of the closet on this one. Here's the piece de resistance which got me - hook, line, and sinker. After this, I was a changed man:

Dearest CT64,

The inference was about my going gaga over the artistry of Pierre Cochereau playing "Dieu Parmi Nous" by Messiaen. I was all JSBach before hearing Cochereau doing Messiaen. Remember, I was an impressionable teen once - and then hearing French fireworks such as this back in the 70's in Notre-Dame was a life-changing experience for me.

Cheers,

Ah yes, I see! He's a fine organist, that's for sure. And the Notre Dame organ is one of the best, I reckon. I don't own any Cochereau playing Messiaen as I have the Olivier Latry set (complete), which I adore. It's the one with the beautiful rainbow colour scheme on the DG box.

Hi CT64,

I have that DG box also - Latry does basically a fantastic job - no doubt about it!

Cheers,

Corno, many thanks for posting that. Damn didn't Cochereau love milking the acoustics there?? Talk about a meeting of high ideals, Cochereau playing Messiaen. Have you heard the recordings of his improvisations? Mind boggling stuff.

The few bars leading up to the cadence of DPN has to be one of the most stunningly apocalyptic in the repertoire.

Hi Soubasse,

You're very welcome dear sir - I'm glad I could be of assistance to you. I have heard just about all the recorded improvs done by Cochereau. As a very young teen I remember hearing Cochereau doing a program of Dupre, Messiaen, and PC's own improvs at Notre-Dame. Man, after hearing PC live for the first time, I was in a state of exaltation.

Cheers,

From such a face or form as yours do even the noblest sentiment sounds like the black utterances of a depraved imagination?

Hi CT64,

Might I humbly inquire if you were addressing me with your latest posting? If so, I'm afraid that you have me flummoxed.

Cheers,
