Gillou also gave a wonderful transcription of the Goldberg variations of Bach, with very edgy registrations.

    Aloha CT64,

I would love to hear Guillou's transcription on either the St. Sulpice, Notre-Dame, or St. Eustache insruments since they have vastly greater *sound-color* resources available.

    Cheerio,

i love listening to the pictures at an exhibition by tomita, farandole by bob james, pavane for a dead princess by deodato, für Elyse on steel pans, i mean there is no sacred music, or if there is it means all music is sacred, and actually, that's what i feel sometimes. music is evolution, because only rationnal things pretend to be static.

    Aloha sunwaiter,

I must take exception to your categorical statement about music cannot be sacred. Yes, there is ethnic music without any ties to a belief system but if we take for example the composers whose music is featured in churches and concert halls we find JSBach who is a Lutheran, Haydn who is Catholic, Rachmaninoff who is Russian Orthodox, and Mozart is Catholic. Yes, they also wrote music for use in a more secular setting.

Then you have Japanese music fostered by Shinto Buddhism, the musics of the Hindus in re to *Ragas* that were very much fostered by their Buddhist belief system, Sikhs, and music from Pakistan fostered by the belief system of Islam.

So you see, it ain't all *black and white*.

    Cheerio,

    CD

Ps: Lets get back to the topic of transcriptions instead of confluencing ethnic and sacred music, ok?
*If a man wants God to hear his prayer quickly, then before he prays for anything else, even his own soul, when he stands and stretches out his hands towards God, he must pray with all his heart for his enemies. Through this action God will hear everything that he asks* -Abba Zeno-

*Protagoras: "Truth is subjective. What is true for you, and what is true for me, is true for me. Your opinion is true by virtue of its being your opinion."

*Socrates: "My opinion is: Truth is absolute, not opinion, and that you are in absolute error. Since this is my opinion, then according to your philosophy you must grant that it is true."

thank you, but i had noticed there were lots of grey!!

as you know i'm an atheist, of very religious (bigot) ascendance. as a "disc-jockey" i loved to put on records entitled "allah wakbarr" by ofo the black copany, "afterforever" by black sabbath, "jesus is my friend" by marvin gaye, and some nusrat fateh ali khan, on the Realworld label. the message is what follows: music will stay music. and yeah i've written this black on white.

as long as music doesn't convey any message of hate or racism, i will play it, not minding what religious background it was made, composed, played on.
