Berlin Philharmonic

Ok, so yesterday I went for a trip with my friends to Berlin, Germany. There was an 'open' rehersal of Berlin Philharmonic. Here's what was played:


1. Edgard Varèse - Intégrales

2. Igor Strawinsky - Konzert für Klavier und Bläser

3. Jonathan Harvey - Messages Uraufführung eines Auftragswerks des Rundfunkchors Berlin

4. Olivier Messiaen - Trois Petites Liturgies de la Présence Divine


Conductor - Reinbert de Leeuw
Piano - Peter Serkin
Ondes Martenot - Dominique Kim



It was an amazing experience for me, even though I'm not into that kind of music.

Acoustics - incredible

Tune - perfect

I was absolutely delighted. I truly do recommend to you all guys to see/hear one of their concerts for yourself.


I also had the pleasure of visiting the Musical Instruments Museum in Berlin. Among different types of harpischords, pianos, corns, Stradivarius violins, clarinets, flutes, trombones, Wurlitzer organ and many, many more - I saw/heard for the very first time the Hammond organ. I'm soo happy. I had even asked the guide if I could have a try and play something, but unfortunately he refused (like there was any possibility I could ruin something). Oh well, it's always worth trying, isn't it?

Mat, did you know that Electric Light Orchestra used this orchestra
for such hits as Turn to Stone, and Telephone Line? Even Roll over
Beethoven! Jeff Lynne of the group couldn't find a decent orchestra
in London so he and his crew went to Berlin to fine one and found
I think that one back in the seventies.

What a wonderful experience for you, Mat

Oh, how I envy those who live across the pond ... all that cultural stuff in relatively close proximity to where you live ... Sure, we have some of this in the states, but not to that degree. The Messiaen must have been absolutely wonderful.

Bummer about not being able to play that Hammond ... but we never know ... next time things may be different, and it never hurts to ask.

Krummhorn, at least one advantage of living in Europe. But hey, don't you have Boston Philharmonic somewhere in the States?. As I said before I'm not into this music. But if I had to pick one, I think it would be Jonathan Harvey "Messages". Anyway, no matter what, being able to go and listen Berliners for yourself is always worth it, imo.

Close to my neck of the woods, there is the Evansville Philharmonic
Orchestra. That one is about 58 miles from my spot. You should
hear them. I like hearing this orchestra. They backed up the Moody
Blues concert I think a few years ago. The concert was spectactular.

Ahhhh - The Berlin Philharmonic - My favorite Orchestra.

I think my church had it's own version of an orchestra at service today.

That's just about what we looked like singing raising our hands and
I believe there were at least five guitars, a brass band, the piano,
drum set, and not to forget the 24 rank wicks pipe organ playing and
jammin with the contempery band with the guitars and drum and
up in the balcany was this bell choir. It felt like christmas while they
practced and played during the service.

Judy, do you have anything to back this up? It is totally new to me and I can't find anything about it at sites like Wikipedia or the Prog Archives.

They were at the time in Berlin when they recorded some of their
music. I will get back with you.

Art Rock you're right. I looked them up on the net and found out that
the orchestra that backed up ELO was in Munich, Germany not Berlin.
I stand corrected on that since. I just loved that group with some of
their music that would almost sound classical with all of the cellos and
violins in the group.
