Thanks for introducing this, Rojo. I have very fond memories of the girls at my school being divided down the middle, The Jackson Five vs The Osmonds. But, then again, I'm older than I usually care to admit! I was on this side - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=C4VCUb...eature=related

I happen to live in Santa Maria, CA, where his famous, or infamous, trial took place. I even served on a jury under the same judge (now retired) who did that one. That was one time when all the newsnoses found out where Santa Maria is -- you should have seen the congestion on Miller St.

Now my question -- HOW did this get into a pipe organ forum?????

    Hi Vicki,

Yah, that 'side picking' thing was weird; why can't one like both? That said, you picked the best side! I've nothing against the Osmonds, of course. J5 are just more better, is all; they've got Michael...

    Hi dll927,

Well, this forum isn't just a pipe organ forum, although that's a huge part of it. There are all kinds of boards here, for any and all kinds of music. This thread is in the general music debate part of the forums.

    Hey Rojo,

to all your other talents I have to add another one - you're a GREAT PROMOTER!! This is quite clear a hyping case for Michael Jackson.

Well, I have never actually truly listened to his records, I am rather a proggy freak...But having read all this ( and watching through the videos of this young gentleman ) I am ready to admit - hey, the guy surely has a talent! Maybe he will become a star one day, who knows??

Hi Andrew Your posts are always so much fun.

Well, I'm quite sure MJ doesn't need any hype whatsoever from me; his talent speaks for itself. I'm just a big fan, and I guess it shows. It's easy to get excited about something you really enjoy.

Thanks for reading and watching; I love a heap of prog rock myself. As I mentioned, I love all kinds of stuff. *goes to visit prog board*

Michael has the best quality voice I've ever heard, hands down. He has the sweetest voice and the most depth to his voice. I don't care what anyone here is saying. Listen to songs like "Someone In The Dark", "Fly Away", "Gone Too Soon", "Smile", "Childhood", "She's Out Of My Life", "Lady In My Life", "Baby Be Mine", etc... He beats everyone in my book. There's a few others whose quality is close, like Christopher Cross, James Taylor, Steve Perry, etc... But vocally, Michael is the most gifted male vocalist I've ever heard. Even his voice coach, Seth Riggs, who is the coach to people like Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross said, according to someone whom I used to speak with and was a student of Seth's, that Michael is the most talented male vocalist he's ever heard.

i love early music from the jacksons, and of course michael's singing. as far as i'm concerned, the interesting period ended after "off the wall". then he did too cheesy things for me. BUT i like some gems like "liberian girl" or "man in the mirror" (i love this song but the most seen performance of it on youtube makes me laugh out loud); my brother had bought the BAD album. talking about BAD, not too long ago i discovered while reading the notes to a copy in a second-hand store that Jimmy Smith, one of my jazz favorite artists, played on the title track!

Thanks for that, Bijan History. Always nice to hear from someone who realizes just how talented vocally this man is. To my ears as well, he has the sweetest and most beautiful voice. Are you sure you don't care what anyone here says though? Because if you read the thread, you may notice that there's a positive general consensus about MJ's talents...

sunwaiter - Personally I don't hear any more or less cheesy-ness after Off The Wall than before; have you heard some of the Jackson 5's sappier tunes? Also, just to say, generally I have no problems with cheesy-ness. Cheese is very tasty. Can I ask, which Man in the Mirror performance makes you laugh? Grammy '88? Where he bounces around?

yes i believe it is 88! it was like a gospel reunion, on a wide stage, and michael enojoyed the width!

it's true that with his brothers he produced some good cheese! maybe that wasn't the right word, i mean, i respect everything he did, it's just a subjective way of listening to it, as always in music. and i must add that i listen to virtually anything, but one of my favourite kinds of music is what we call funk. this is why i consider the eighties have been fatal to the funkyness of michael's music. but once more, there are some tunes i can appreciate, and it is because he has such a great voice.

actually in my pantheon of singers i like the best, i'd put, in no particular order:

stevie wonder, donny hattaway, michael jackson, bill withers, peter gabriel, freddie mercury, david clayton-thomas, ... i forget some others of course.

Why don't we post it so peeps can see what we're talking about:

    Look at that bouncing around.

I don't know if you read my posts around here, sunwaiter, but if you have, then you know that I'm a funk fan as well.

Just to add, the tune Thriller is pretty funky, and that's from the 80's. And PYT and Baby Be Mine as well...

I like most of your choices of vocalists there.

Michael Jackson is scheduled to make an announcement at a Press Conference this Thursday concerning a series of concerts. He is currently in London, where said concerts are to take place (02 Arena).

Stay tuned for further details as they come.

Well, once again, music is such a subjective thing. Definition of "funk" is another potential topic for a thread! In order to stick with Michael's oeuvre, i would say that i find "working day and night" or "don't stop til you get enough are way funkier. I'm much more into the 70's, as you can guess. that's why i have my own definition of funkiness. samle for metal, jazz, etc...

i hope the link works. i can't lauch youtube videos at my working place.

    Take care!

oh and thanks for the embedded 1988 video!

At least that would keep him out of Santa Maria, which is where I live. That trial had the town in a tizzy for a good while. Apparently, it was enough for Rodney Melville, the judge in the case. He's now retired. I was once on a jury in his court (not the MJ trial!!).

So apparently it's true; Michael Jackson will give a series of concerts in London in July. I'll be back to post more info later on.

    Thanks sunwaiter Funky link.

I'm not about to debate degrees of funkiness, and that would indeed belong in a new thread.

Not to worry dll927; I highly doubt he'll be back in Santa Maria.

That was an interesting press conference. Retirement at 50 and he'll make a ton more dough to leave for his kids. Did you see all the people in the audience, including grown men who were crying? He still has adoring fans who love his music. I'd love to be in London for the first concert, but I have to be in Florida at that time.

Will you be going to one of the concerts, Rojo?
