I would love to be at the first concert in London, but I have to be in Florida then. Did you see the grownups in the audience crying...still? No doubt his legend lives on. And he should generate another fortune for his kids. He's only 50 and will be retiring on a "high note" while he still has the juice.

Will you be going to one of his concerts, Rojo?

    Hi Stephen

Actually, I have another quote from AEG Live, the company that's sponsoring MJ, and this London gig may not be the complete end of things; I guess we'll see. I'll find that quote later and post it.

Oh Lordy, how I'd love to go. At the moment I'm just dreaming.

No matter if I get to go or not, I'm very happy for MJ.

    Edit- Here's the quote:

"Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of AEG Live, told The Times that the ten London concerts would mark the first step of a three-year tour and the release of a new album."

Not 100% sure of the legitimacy of the source, but here's the link to the info; here's hoping it's true-

"I'm not about to debate degrees of funkiness, and that would indeed belong in a new thread."

I think there ain't no need to do such a thing, since i believe it's not a matter of degrees, but of one's conception of what is funky. Jimmy Smith did play funky music back in the 50's after all... And at this very moment, my socks are way too funky!

Now, can socks really be too funky? I think not.

I would love it if MJ came out with some fun, funky new tunes. Not holding my breath though. Neo-funk, anyone?

Michael Jackson is a huge influence on today's music, I was just wondering how different music, especially pop music, would be if Michael Jackson had never entered the music scene.
    What do you think

A new album entitled "Michael" will be in stores Dec. 14. It contains previously unreleased material. The new song "Breaking News" will be presented on his website (michaeljackson.com) tomorrow via live stream, for free. A snippet of it is available, with video, right now. The first single will be released later this month.

Mixed feelings about this, but I'm definitely curious.

    Edit:

    OMG, what a mess...

---> me listening to this song!!! It's Hollywood Tonight, from the new Michael album. THIS is what I've been waiting for. Funky, fun and makes one want to move! Yesssss!!

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh.....

Fantastic song leaks I've got a hold of so far:

Blue Gangsta - Been listening to this on repeat. Real trumpets expertly played, smooth, and then angry MJ vocals, really cool harmonies by MJ... OMG

I figured out the piano hook in a couple of minutes, and I'll be showing it to some students.

    Not on album.

Do You Know Where Your Children Are -
Also on repeat. Rockin guitar hook, gripping narrative lyrics expressively delivered by the man, powerful sweeping guitar solo.

    Not on album.

I ain't gonna comment on the Cascio tracks...

*goes back to boogie-ing to Hollywood Tonight*

I've listened to the free live streaming of the album twice now. Is the new album any good, you ask? Yes, it is. Not great, but good.

I sure would love to hear the originals, to see what exactly has been done to these tracks. The lead vocals on three of the tracks (Breaking News, Keep Your Head Up and Monster,) are strange, and remain a big question mark for me. Why these songs were included on the album in this dubious state leaves me baffled. The lead vocals resemble Michael's voice, but do not sound like the real thing, particularly (but not exclusively) in terms of the vibrato and diction. If there is some effect involved, it would be nice if someone would explain what that effect would be. As effects go, Hollywood Tonight uses some form of effect (autotune?) on the lead vocals, yet they are recognizable as being Michael's.

It should not sound like a different person singing than the name on the album cover. It's a shame because I think the three songs in question are actually fairly good in some respects. However, I can't really appreciate them under the circumstances. The Twilight Zone continues. Baffling.

    Stand out tracks for me:

Hollywood Tonight. I'm not digging the nephew's spoken lines which are too long and trite, the incongruous chant intro, nor the whistling ending. Still, MJ's beatboxing is cool and the bass line is funky. This is a fun, danceable, Billie Jean-esque track that would make a good second single. The chorus actually resembles that of Breaking News; up a tone, then a half tone, then back down same notes.

Best of Joy. Supposedly the last track Michael worked on before his death. Beautiful ballad highlighting his spectacularly lovely voice. I hear similarities here with songs by the Beegees, giving this new song a bit of a retro feel. Punctuated by finger snaps, and decorated with flute sounds.

Behind The Mask. Crowd applause intro gives a live sensation to this funky up-tempo track. Minor chords give this song a slightly dark overall feeling.

There are other good songs on the album as well. However, none of these tracks have had as much of an impact on me as Do You Know Where Your Children Are, and Blue Gangsta. Perhaps because they were actually finished by the man...
