    Dear Ms. RoJo,

The statue is of Ilya Muromets, a Bogatyr and is the namesake of Reinhold Gliere's Symphony No.3 "Ilya Muromets". Ilya Muromets is also a Russian folk-epic. Ilya is considered a defender of Russia, having a hand in driving away the Mongol Hordes.

    Here's some more info:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilya_Muromets

    Here's the whole statue:

Aah. Very interesting musical association there CD.

Come to think of it, the helmet does look 'ancient Russian'. Should have caught that. Oh well. I'd better brush up on ancient headgear for future pics.

I'll have a looksee later on for a pic to post.

    Hi Ms. Judy,

Ummm - Russian Indians? Ummm - No, not really. Below is a website for a timeline of Russian history:

    http://www.infoplease.com/spot/russiatime1.html

Also, let me include a Russian childrens illustrated and animated video clip about Ilya Muromets as defender of Russia and her people:

Yes, its in Russian but the animation helps one to easily understand who is the the good guy and who is the bad guy.

    Cheers,

    Hi Ms. RoJo,

Interesting object you've chosen - The first thing that came to my mind was "Pagliaccio".......

Ooh, good guess CD. But might there not be another character that springs to mind here as well?

    Hi Ms. Rojo,

The make subject comes across as a little diffident and daffy. The painting looks like it could come from Spain or Portugal. My other enfeebled guesstimation is Sancho Panza. I'll have to ask for another hint.......

    Cheers,

Well, the painter was French, and sometimes painted subjects from Italian comedy.

    That should help. lol
