Well, my vote goes to two people: Gore Vidal (American) and Arthur C Clarke (British but lived a life in exile in Africa).

Anyone else like to pipe in ... ? If I had half the wit and sharpness of tongue of Gore Vidal I'd be a sea snake I'm sure (which happen to be just about the most venomous creatures alive).

CT64,

He wrote the poems that Shostakovich set to music in his 13th Symphony and The Execution Of Stepan(Stenka)Razin.

Cheers,

I must also include Solzhenitsyn - Man, that man DID suffer extreme hardship in the Soviet labor-camps. Also, Vaclav Havel - What a Playright!!!

Well I am not a great fan of modern writers. I like Thomas Hardy and William Golding, I also like Agatha Christie. I like Josephine Cox, who writes a little like Catherine Cookson.

I much prefer writers from further back, like The Brontes and Jane Austen. Just call me old fashioned.

Let's not forget Tolken who wrote Lord of the Rings. The trilogy came
out in the 70's and one made a movie with sequels.

I would say Tolkien is a very fine philologist as he created a whole new language but his trilogy lacks originality and imagination. His story is heavy-handed and uninvolving. Characters lack uniqueness and carry unmistakable resemblences to figures of history.Overall absurdly over-praised.(Yes,yes i said it.At last.:))All in my humble amateurish opinion.

I would include H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and J.G. Ballard among the finest of the 20th century science-fiction writers.
