    J.H.C. - depends on your beliefs, I guess.

    Entirely, no argument here, I read an article a while ago that alleged that trees actually do communicate with each other, wow

    foot long to keep as a memorial for that tree. I will clean it up a bit
    later and fix it to be a yule log for Christmas. Believe it or not I imagine
    the smell of a fresh cut tree like that is the smell of maple syrup before
    it's cooked and poured into containers for sale. It smelled wonderful
    all of the fresh cut wood downstairs.

    Hi methodistgirl, couldn't you have saved a cutting or a seed from it?

    The poor tree was in bad shape. I realized when I saw how hollow it
    was the tree was finally put out of it's misery. It was suffering. The
    last winter storm broke one of it's big boughs, the wind a few days ago
    kinda finished it off and left it in a weak state. I have a piece of the tree.
    A piece of one of the big limbs to remember it by. I will clean it up and
    turn it into a yule log. Don't worry. I'm not painting it white to make it
    look like a candy stick. I will leave it natural and make a crocheted
    strip of red and white with gold and green to make it a yule log. I know
    one thing it is heavy. Just a small piece. He was a mighty old tree
    while he stood tall and proud. May it rest in peace and make someone
    a nice piece of furniture or maybe a musical instrument. That would
    be nice.

    Hi Judy

    That sound like a good idea.

    Just for you

    I think that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

    A tree that looks to God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    Sorry, please excuse me, I jumped to conclusions when I noticed that you were in the Cotswolds but the Flemish and English humour is very similar,
    btw the cotswolds are a beautiful part of England when I was in the UK I spent a lot of time there

    No need whatsoever to apologize - especially since there are not that many Brabanders/Flemish people living in the Cotswolds (well, after 40 years, I have never met them, let's put it that way)... I suppose that you are right, inasmuch that our humour and British humour can be very similar - both nations like to play with words, use the understatement and their humour can be very dry, if not satirically supercilious...

    Also, the Cotswolds are indeed a very beautiful part of this beautiful country. Even the names of our rivers are poetry: Evenlode, Windrush, Coln, &tc. Moreover, of course in this, his special Year, as we remember Ralph Vaughan Williams, RVW was born here in the Cotswolds, in Down Ampney (the "p" is not pronounced)...

    I've never had anything remotely close to a major problem with a Catholic, but I've had a handfull of minor-major problems with with a few jews. I had no idea what the whole jew-stink was about until I moved and stayed in The Northern Bronx for about 6 months.

    . People have burned the witches not because they were more cruel, or more blood-thirsty than they are today. They simply REALLY believed that the witches brought mischief and were the sources of evil. If we still believed it now, we would obviously do the same.

    We now keep a lot of that garbage around because we now realize and understand the economic significance involved. You have to have a small percentage of lower/poverty class, if only in a small %, to motivate and sustain the morale of the working class. They have to get up and go to work each morning feeling that they're better than somebody. This is simple human nature. This gives the working class someone (a people) they can look down upon and drive them to perform thus keeping the two classes in a conducive economic check, so to speak.
