question: arrangement of the divisions of my organ

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to figure out where each of the divisions of the pipe organ I play on are. All of the pipes are located around the sanctuary, at the front of the church. There are two pipe cases mounted on two facing walls which hold the smaller pipes. (mostly principles, wooden flutes, and some short reeds I think). There are two larger cases which are mounted on supports on two opposite sides of the sancturary. Both have identical facade pipes (which I think are the speaking 16' principles, but I'm not positive). The latter two cases seem to be enclosed, like the choir and the swell, but I don't see any swell shutters and there are no other places for the 8' great principles. (There are 8' bourdon pipes on the backs of the two enclosed cases). You can access both of these cases by using a small ladder. The other two are open. I have some pictures and I will post them soon. I also find it hard to believe that some of the 16' reed pipes and the 32' bassoon are located in such a small case (I know they are not digital however). I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to where the specific divisions are located. I know it will be hard without pictures, so I'll post some.

    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Certainly, pictures would help to visualize what you are describing. Alternatively, you could pin down a note or two and walk in front of the cases to determine where they are speaking from.

In regards to the shades, is there any change in volume level when you either open or close the expression shoe?

Perhaps you can also obtain a key for the chambers? Going on an organ crawl is very enlightening and quite educational.

    Hi Krummhorn,
I will try setting a note and listening to find out where it is coming from.
There is a change in volume when I use the expression pedals, so I know there are swell shades somewhere. I have a hunch they are on the tops of the larger cases, however I don't know, seeing they are above everyone's head. I also plan on going into the chambers, I just need to bring a higher chair or a small ladder.

And if your organ is like ours, a dust coat and mask.

    Aloha gebbytoo,

Please be very careful when going into the organ case and pipe chambers - it can easily turn into a disaster - both for you and the pipes.

    Cheers,
