    Post Commissioning a piece...

I'm kinda the organ scholar at my church ( I just dont get paid.) Anyways, next year is the 80th anv. of our Skinner Pipe Organ, and the 10 year anv. our current organist has been there. When our priest was there for 10 years, we had a mass commissioned for her. I want to propose to our vestry that we commission a piece in honor of the organ, and our organist. I'm not sure how though. Is it simply finding a composer, asking them to commission a piece, telling them what you want kinda....? I dunno. I've never done this. So some help would be nice.

    Thanks in advance!

    Colin

Hi Bachman, as a composer and arranger and sometime organist (my organ playing skills are basic) I know where you're coming from. Just to clarify, where are you posting from, if it's Australia then I certainly have a relationship with a couple of fine and internationally known composers. Where are you located?

    Hi Colin,

Welcome to MIMF ... a place of refuge filled with lots of friendly folk. Enjoy!!

I can vouch for Musicalis and his sincere offer. He has been a very talented organist and now devotes all his energies towards composing, and we are certainly glad that he shares his compositions with us here on this forum.

Two composers who do commissions for organ that I can personally recommend: Charles Callahan and Daniel Gawthrop. They are both excellent and both have websites.

    Aloha Mr. Larkin,

Charles Callahan has done an excellent arrangement of *Danny Boy* - its so achingly beautiful that it sends me hunting for tissue paper so that I can wipe the tears streaming down my face.

    Cheerio,
