Farewell to a fine British conductor

Very sad to hear this news. I've just put on his RPO Arnold #7 as I'm tapping away here. Boom-chucka boom-chucka! Some of the legendary feistiness (from both of them!).

toto - yeah, he's a stable and insightful conductor, I own quite a few of his recordings. I love his Elgar and Bax symphonies recordings, sublime.

I guess I'll have to find some recordings that Mr. Handley has been part of - Suffice it to say he was under my radar screen.

There's an extensive discography on this Wikipedia page. I guess you could typify the majority of his recordings as being of large-scale British works of the last 100 years – from Elgar to McCabe, say – and generally of a more mainstream rather than avant-garde outlook. Delius, Bantock, Vaughan Williams, Bax, Finzi, Arnold, Simpson ... well worth hunting down!

Agree.
He and Bryden Thomson are to a large responsible for my love of British classical music.
