Orchestra manager application

There is a position of "orchestra manager" up for grabs here at present ... not sure if I'll apply, but have been thinking about the pros and cons, for example (interview scenario):

When faced with an orgy in a hotel room spa would you:
a) Join in
b) Add bubble bath
c) Call the police
d) Run away
e) Hide in the wardrobe
f) All of the above

Would be prudent to choose e) then rapidly d), eh?

Or another scenaior Internationally famous concert violinist Dame Margaret Marval leaves her squillion dollar stradivarius in a hotel in Spain.

"Oh God, I've left my f**king Strad in some dodgy hotel in Barcelona, get it back or your sacked".

How would you handle that sort of pressure? LOL

Its a tough and lonely position being an Orchestra Manager - Equal parts Diplomat and Enlightened Despot is probably key to survival.

Hmm, this seems to sum up the average orchestral rehearsal pretty well......





More to the point--I always get the impression that managing an orchestra is like being caretaker to a roomful of children. In the few regional orchestras I've been involved with, there are of course many responsible mature musicians, but they seem to be balanced with an equal number of people who have sacrificed the ability to function socially/responsibly/maturely for their art. That or they simply don't have room in their selves to be good musicians and behave well, too. Then you have to balance that with the needs, wants, and ego of the conductor.

Some diificult questions there. I agree probably e) then d), as for Dame Margaret Marval, what was she doing leaving her stradivarius behind? especially in a dodgy hotel. It would be very tempting to tell her to go fetch, but I supose you can't. I just hope the orgy does not include the instruments.

If you were to go for it, there would have to be rules. No Dames leaving their violin behind, and no orgies on concert night.

All you can do is way up the pros and cons, and them decide.
