    Movies about musicians

    Hi there

I'm mid-way through watching Hilary and Jackie (about the Du Pre sisters - the fake playing is not too bad) and am finding it uplifting and devastating at the same time. Do you have a favourite movie about a musician or composer?

If the truth be told my very, very favourite is The Glenn Miller Story. But, then again, I'm a bit odd.

Sorry, I take it back about Hilary and Jackie. Just plain devastating.

I must be odd too beacuse I like "The Glenn Miller Story" as well.
I also like "Song of Norway" because I like Greig's music.

The Jazz Singer is a movie about this guy making it from New York City.
I just love Neil Diamond's movie.

Apologies for my second post - I was sobbing! It's worth a look, but only after investing in several boxes of tissues.

Ms Margaret - I'd forgotten all about The Song of Norway. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Judy - yes, that version of The Jazz Singer is very good, but I was brought up on old musicals so prefer the Al Jolson version. I think they'd call it child abuse nowadays!

Corno and Mat, I haven't heard of your movies, but will keep my eyes open.

    Hi Tûrwethiel,

Glad to remind you of "Song of Norway"

Of course who could forget "Amadeus", about Mozart from the view of Salieri. Another one that quite moved me was "Lady sings the blues" about Billie Holiday, she seemed to have a sad life.

Early images we remember are often the most potent. "The Man With the Golden Arm" an old black and white with Frank Sinatra as a heroin using musician living with Kim Novak, a waitress, and Kirk Douglas' movie as a jazz trumpeter stand out, along with "The Days of Wine and Roses", "Baby The Rain Must Fall" and "The Great Race" (The Sweetheart Tree). My heart still pops when I think of Cinderella, alone at home, washing the floors, a bubble reflecting her singing face, another bubble popping on with harmony, and another and another until the air is full and a whole choir sounds, popping back one by one until she's alone again, unnaturally.

There was a tv movie about John Lennon called "In My Life". It was about
the start of the Beatles and their breakup and also John and Yoko.

That sounds like a movie to look out for. Thank you, Judy.
