• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Advent Carol Service

I attended Christ Church St. Laurence's Advent Carol Service last night (Sunday evening).

The choir was brilliant, as normal and Peter Jewkes' organ playing wonderful, too.

Dr Neil McKwan's music choices were interesting to say the least, only knew one hymn!

Hymns:

1. O come, O come, Emmanuel! (the only one I really knew).
2. Come, thou Redeemer of the earth (Michael Praetorius)
3. People, look east. The time is near (Chris Steel d 1991)
4. Hills of the North, rejoice echoing songs arise. (Martin Shaw)
5. On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry (Charles Coffin/John Chandler)
6. Wake, O wake! with tidings thrilling the watchmen all the air are filling (Philipp Nicolai)

Other musical bits and pieces:

The lamentation - Edward Cuthbert Bairstow
Bogoroditsye Dyevo - Rachmaninov
There is no rose - John Joubert
E'en so Lord Jesus, Quickly come - Paul Manz
Magnificat in D - George Dyson

Peter then gave a very fine rendition of Bach's wonderful 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' (see my Bach Chorales PDFs for the music).

Obviously all this glorious music was intersperesed with Seven Lessons and a Gospel reading by the Parish Priest. All the church was clothed in purple, though I understand the English Anglicans are nowadays adopting red for this time of year.

Did your place of worship have such an event?

My church also had an Advent service. The songs were:
I Surrender All
The Greatest Thing
Give us Clean Hands
Sing with Joy
I Want to walk as a child of the light
and last,
Advent Alleluia (Come Long Expected Jesus)

After the service was Come all Christians be committed for the last song.
It was a good thing that we didn't have to wear our robes. The sanctury
was full and I thought I would burn up with the lights shining on us.

Our church will be doing a lighter version of this, offering both sacred and secular Christmas music. For our particular community, if we did a completely sacred event, our attendance would be almost zip ... stir in something different, and the people come out of the woodwork in droves. Getting people into the church is the idea here, which eventually helps to boost our membership.

At this Advent program, we will do community singing as well as reading, and music played by other talented people in our congregation ... the Soprano soloist that I have been accompanying for the past 8 years, is singing "Grandmother Got Run Over By a Reindeer". I'm performing a rendition of Drummer Boy, and my own version of Frosty the Snowman, amongst other things. Our church choir will be singing a few anthems, and the bell choir will be doing a couple secular tunes as well.

During the first Carol Service (only our congregation) we used mainly hymns well known to the congregation and musicians/singers etc from the congregation.

For the big inter denominational service the next Sunday the massed choir did most of the singing with less partisipation from the "audiance".

The program was:
Fanfare for Christmas - Robin Wells
Advent Message - Come Lord Jesus by Martin How
Annunciation Carol - Basque Carol
Joy to the World - G.F. Handel, arr John Rutter
Christus is gebore (Christ is born) - Gordon Young
A Maiden Most Gentle - John Rutter (French Carol)
Born on Earth the Divine Christ Child - John Rutter
Star Carol - John Rutter
Three Kings of Orient - Hopkins, arr John Rutter (;)I think a I see a pattern here)
Come Colour Rise - Grant McLachlan
O Holy Night - French Carol, arr................yip! John Rutter
Silent Night (in Afrikaans, English and Sesotho)
O come, allye faithful (Three languages again)

All songs accompanied by the Free State Symphony Orchestra.
